Hi,

We are borrowing my brothers FC in a few weeks to test it out and see if we like it. We have read up loads on them and looked at loads so know what they look like and do etc. The only thing i am not sure of is should you go on a grass pitch or hard standing or does it not make any difference?

Thanks

Julia

We have taken ours away 3 times and always been on grass and its been ok.  We do put some small blocks of wood under the legs just in case.

We have booked a hard standing pitch for one of our summer holiday camps and this will be the first time.

I can imagine that hard standing would be better if the weather is bad, not sure if there are other advantages

Hard standings also tend to be more level than grass pitches, as well as less prone to bogging.

Quite often you will pitch the FC on hard standing and awning over the grass so main unit is generally more stable of hard standing. If weather is fine then either is suitable - I know which i would choose in this current period of weather!

Have fun trying it out - great way to see if it suits

If you want more of the laid back rural feel you can't beat grass but now we always go for hardstanding where available for the reasons mentioned - much drier and less muck to bring into the FC. Also on a grass pitch if the grass has just been cut you can't avoid getting it on your shoes and then transfering it into the camper. But sometimes the hardstandings can be a bit closer together and a bit more regimented compared with the grass areas so I think you do sometimes lose a bit going on hardstanding.

If you do go on grass definitely put a wooden block or metal plate under the legs to stop them sinking into the ground - can happen over several days even on fairly solid ground.

Just back from two weeks in Suffolk where we were pitched on a grass pitch with full Awning erected. First week was ok and it appeared relatively flat.........Wrong, second week weather was some of the worst I have seen and awning was flooded out on at least 3 times. We also found that the camper was being invaded by loads of the tiny money spiders, big problem for my wife. Think our next trip we might look for a Hardstanding!

We've been out 3 times so far in our Solena, once on a C&CC "grass" pitch (those who have used the Graffham site will understand why I put it in quotes ) and twice on CC hardstandings. I must say, we much preferred the hardstandings. As stated above, they tend to be more level. We use a thick groundsheet beneath the zip-in groundsheet of the awning and this was clean and dry when we packed up. We also use a carpet in the awning and this made it quite comfortable to walk on.

Another benefit of being on a hardstanding on a CC site is that you don't have to worry about any rules regarding lifting groundsheets or using breathable ones, which would be a problem for us using a ZIG.

As regards hardstandings being regimented, our experience so far has been quite the opposite. On both the CC sites we have visited (we only joined this year), when I asked if they had any preference as to which way I should pitch, the reply was "any way you like, as long as you are completely on the hardstanding". I'm not sure if this is a new policy or we've just been lucky.

Might be a silly question, but never done a hard standing before, how hard is the standing? can you still use pegs in the normal way

When I said regimented I meant that on quite a few sites the hardstandings are all in a straight row, but yes on C&CC sites they don't tend to worry which way you face. On some CC sites they are still a bit particular how you pitch.
Graffam, by the way, from what I can remember from about 25 years ago when we were there is perhaps one of the more informally laid out of C&CC sites.

One or two you might be unlucky enough to come across are concrete, but on the normal gravel hardstanding you can use rock pegs.

If you intend to use hard standing make sure you take rock pegs and a lump hammer not one of those rubber mallet things

The C&C Club seem to have a policy of taking the nicest grass pitches, and covering them in mucky grey gravel, but they keep the slope somehow. This stuff doesn't hold pegs well, but it's fine for FCs without awnings,or with,in nice weather. I prefer grass when possible, but camping on hardstanding is better than not camping at all.One problem with hardstandings though is that you tend to be surrounded by deaf,tv watching, hobnail boot wearing caravanners, who think that as they can't hear you,you can't hear them.

We recently returned from our first trip away in the TT on a hardstanding pitch.  It was horrendous to say the least!  Complete contrete pitch so no pegs in the front of the TT and most of the awning too.  We had to use rocks collected from the site to 'secure' the awning to the ground.  We will book a grass pitch from now.

Concrete is pretty unusual! Just ask when booking if its gravel or chippings and you should be fine with rock pegs

Club sites do not specify the type of hardstanding on the web,so you need to phone the site direct,we got caught out this way last year at Boroughbridge.
