Anyone bought a new motor home from another European country? Can't help noticing they're 10k cheaper, until you start adding on import tax. Not sure if it would be worth the hassle.

Theres no import tax if you buy from another EU country. If you buy in Germany for example, you visit the dealer, do the deal, pay by bank transfer including German vat, thats it.

The German dealer will fit temporary export plates to allow you to drive it back to UK. Your only extra costs are the cost of UK registration & preparation of vehicle. You will probably have to fit rhd headlamps & rear foglight needs to be on UK offside.

If you buy new ( or under 6 months old )in Germany the VAT is payable here, not there.
I recently bought a 4 month old vehicle and the whole process was very simple. Even allowing for the cost of collection and registering here in the UK, I probably saved 20k off the cost of buying new here.

Ours is LHD but as we do nearly all our camping in Europe that doesn`t bother me in the least.

Probably easiest is to buy in north Belguim, the Dutch speaking part where the dealers will speak fluent English & only an hours drive from Calais if you fancy a day trip Urbano are a big dealer in Ostend.

I guess the vat thing has changed for Germany as their rate is now less than UK. Previously you just did the deal, drove it home & the DVLA will supply you with a registration pack, you need proof of legal purchase obviously & original reg doc if van is secondhand.

/ rate is much worse now than last yr unfortunately. Gone from 70p = 1 to 79p = 1.
