In the early 1900s there were series of books for young adults featuring Tom Swift. They were dire as only good uplifting American authors can be. The main trademark was that every action was always accompanied by an adverb which related to it. This form became known as a Tom Swifty
"I hurt my foot" said Tom lamely
"I can't walk properly" he said limply
"Not tonight" she said frigidly
"I can't get beyond the 24th letter" he said ecstatically
