Hearing loads of negative things about the Olympics (G4S, M4 repairs, road congestion, accommodation costs, fast food chain wars blah blah. I'm not a sports fan and live in the north west and have strong feelings about how money should be spent to benefit the individuals who live and work (or want to work but can't get a job).

TBH I don't really follow the news as it either depresses or angers me so my thoughts and opinions on the subject are'nt necessarily based on anything! But - it would be great to get a balanced view.

So - whats REALLY good about the Olympics, especially for those of us who live in the deep dark areas of the country that feel left out and unaffected.

Sorry to be negative again but being in London there's only one good thing about the Olympics and that is the 12th of August - the day it all ends! My main annoyance is the fact that I'm not allowed to take any leave from work until the end of september because of the Olympics. I don't even watch or enjoy it.

Maybe worse if you did - if you couldn't take time off to go to watch! Never mind - think of all the polititians on their summer breaks who will be able to go - or go away to avoid the kerfuffle (sp?). Now doesn't that make you feel better?

I love the Olympics. Its about the only time we get to see some unusual sports on TV
I love it when Brits do well. Its superb that we are dominating the world in cycling and rowing - we only get to see that in the Olympics.
We have a chance to show the UK in a good light.
We get to focus on decent hard working competitors instead of low-life politicians and bankers.
And I've got tickets for the athletics.

Something good about the Olympics? Well, they have cut 30 minutes from the opening ceremony. That has to be good news.

You have answered your own question

Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

We do have to showcase Britain to the world as we no longer own most of it. We need to sell ourselves and the Olympics was a great opportunity to do that but it was a great opportunity for Britain to show the way in getting back to basics with the GAMES and avoiding the excesses and free loaders.
We have completely missed that opportunity - it's not about the games sadly.
And its in the wrong place.

I guess it depends on whether you are a glass half full or a glass half empty person.

I LOVE the Olympics - I'll be glued to every minute I can be (not easy when I have to be at work - and I can never take leave at this time of year, Olympics or no Olympics - it will be October before I can have more than a couple of days off), and I've got tickets for the Paralympics.  I watched the Torch pass my place of work, I'm loving the build up and the hype - can't wait for next Friday when it all starts.  There is something peculiarily British about critising absolutely everything, and I just can't understand it.

INot much fun for the military who are losing leave because of the security fiasco!

Not particularly interested in it, as I feel the vast amounts of money would have been better spent elsewhere!

Good bit off to France on 24 August fotr couple of weeks!

Personally I love the idea of us hosting the Olympics here in the UK. I was two the last time they were here!!! How is this for a lovely moment. We went to watch the Torch relay in MK, it was in the morning and there were lots of young excited kids there. They are of course lucky as they are unsullied by the negativeness of their elders and betters and see it for what it is an exciting occasion. But the point of this rambling is that prior to the Torch arriving the Police on motorbikes were slowly making their way along the lines of youngsters high fiving them which they loved. What country in the world would that happen in other than the UK. On the first day of the Olympics it will be my 66th birthday a fact I have been reminded of on an almost daily basis for the last five years!!!!

Yes there has been a lot of negatives/bad press, but I'm sure this has happened in other countries who previously held the games. They would have had their fair share of problems, the only difference is that we would not have read or heard about here.
