Hubby always has to pay several 100 pounds, he has varifolcals hese days.

It shouldn't cost hundreds. I go to Vision Express and if I'd had frames from one of the cheaper ranges, my last pair would have been £120 for varifocals.

I wish Fran!  My lenses alone (from Vision Express) were over £200.  Even with cheap frames (and I always settle for something I can live with from the cheap frames - can't afford to even LOOK at the designer frames!) I'm lucky if my glasses are under £300.  It's all to do with the compexity of the prescription and any extras you have to have.

Don't know how they'd compare for complicated prescriptions but I've started getting my bog standard single vision glasses from glasses direct. At their prices it's not so bad when I sit on or lose a pair.

The wife had her eyes lasered, she was about as bad as eyesight could be,it cost £500 an eye but because she worked for the NHS they did it as a "do one get one free".This was eight years ago and she has been glasses free since although her eyesight has just begun to deteriorate again and she now needs glasses but not at the prescription she needed before. Her friend had a similar op a year earlier, her eyesight was slightly better, and her eyesight is still perfect. If your glasses are costing £300 a go then perhaps this might be a consideration, I'm not saying it is the answer to all the problems but for some it might be a very cost effective solution and worth asking the question.

My OH had a flash back accident when he was in the Army which left him blind for two years. After numerous operations he can see again but needs very special lenses. Like others here they have to be very thin, varifocals and with prisms. The last pair he had cost nearly a thousand euros, and he cannot do without them, so we have to pay up. We do have insurance but it doesn't cover the whole amount. If SG Thomas is right about them being cheaper here I dread to think what they would cost in Britain. They were about the same in the US and that was with insurance.

Have you looked at Asdas Optitions? I was amazed at the prices, I've just ordered 2 pairs for £99 and the lences are getting thinned(I have a strong prescription) Varifocals aren't much dearer either.

I've just ordered and received my first 2 pairs of glasses from Glasses Direct, following an email I got from MSE regarding an offer they had.  Ended up with 2 pairs of lovely glasses, one tinted one normal for just under £40.  I have to have a thick lense on my right eye but must still just be in that cheap bracket in lenses.  Very pleased with the service and will use them again when I next need new glasses

£474 for my first pair of varifocals yesterday. Like others, they need thinning and because we are active a decent wide field lens. If it cures my current eye strain issues I will be delighted.

Yes you can get them cheaply but the field of vision varies enormously. I also have pupils that aren't evenly spaced with a 5mm variance. I would try online ones if it was all much simpler but in my case it would be foolish.

I can recommend White Rose of Huddersfield for specs. They will beat Specsavers and Optical Express by quite a bit.
