Finally received my performance bonus and looking to replace my Windows (Nokia) phone. It MUST be SIM free as I don't want to be tied into a contract and I currently have a rolling monthly SIM.

I'm torn between the Samsung J3 and the LG K8. Both are similar in price.

Wants:
1. Good battery life
2. Decent sound quality as my current phone is bad - ringtones aren't very loud and unless on speakerphone I can't hear who I'm speaking to and sound is distorted!
3. Reasonable camera
4. Ease of use
5. Ideally, ability to tether although I don't know if they will let me tether?

Opinions please.

TIA

Thanks gedsjeep.

I'm looking for something that I hopefully don't need to charge every day so if the battery life is good it's a contender.

Hi, thanks but I'm only really looking at the Samsung and LG. I did have a quick look via Amazon but it's dearer than the two I'm considering.

If you are on amazon, have a look at the just5 freedom x1.
I lost my HTC and replaced it with this. Massive battery, good processor and ram. It is actually better than the HTC that cost 3 times as much. Designed in Riga and it has a non slip back. No NFC but I like it and I'm a bit of a techie.
It also has dual sim slots and you can take the back off to change the battery etc.
I bought mine in Lithuania for 150 Euro. Amazon has it for 200 so a bit expensive.

I have the moto g4 play.

Far better than a budget Samsung or LG IMO.

Much more phone for your money.

Personally, for that budget, I would buy the Huawei P10 Lite ... similar price to the Samsung J3 2017 version but with twice the memory, twice the ram and a much bigger battery.
https://www.carphonewarehouse.com/huawei/p10-lite.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwu7LOBRBZEiwAQ........

I don't like Samsungs as they always seem to have so many superfluous Samsung apps taking up space on a limited memory. I have no experience of the other brands mentioned although the one that ewen c refers to looks to have very good specs for the price.

The Honor 6A is another one to consider (nice price on Amazon) ... similar specs to the Samsung J3 but bigger battery and much cheaper.

It sure is Bessie. It doesn't have gorilla glass, the body is plastic, no NFC and it is running android 5.1 but it whizzes along. No lag or memory issues and a second sim port means I can get local payg abroad where there is no EU data roaming.

Both of the phones you mention have fairly poor cameras but then they are budget phones - the tech has to go into the phone at that price and not the camera.

Of the 2 the LG is slightly ahead of the Samsung at that end of the range. The Samsung is a far cheaper phone to manufacture which is why so many phone companies are offering them on superbudget contracts.

As said though, for the small price increase the Moto G5 is several steps up in performance, reliability and build quality. It is better value for money by a fair way.

I tend to go the other way with my own phones - I'd rather buy a 2 year old top of the range model second hand than a budget or medium priced phone new. I'm currently still using a Samsung S5 which I have had for 3 years and is by far the best phone I've had. the camera is superb, it has been 100% reliable and very sturdy. Wi-Fi performance is excellent, battery life is extremely good. It cost me 100 and as said - I've had it 3 years! And - Samsung updated it to Android 6 so pretty much every app still works fine.

It is only just now starting to slow down and I'm considering replacing it with a Samsung S6. Again, my budget will be 100 and I'm in no hurry so will wait for a mint condition one at that price or less.

A few of you are favouring the Moto G5 so I think I'm going to have a look at that one as well. I'd prefer a name I've heard of so reluctant to consider others although I've heard of Huawei.

Decisions, decisions ....

Take care which version of the Samsung you are comparing with. There is really quite a difference between the 2016 and 2017 versions!

Huawei are one of the biggest phone manufacturers in the world ... and Honor is a Huawei brand.
