OH has just told me what he is buying me for my birthday, a new laptop. I suppose I need one, but...anyway, tomorrow I have to go with him to PC world and answer a load of questions which I don't have a scooby about, speed etc. I use my laptop for queries/answers on here, looking things up generally, shopping, fb, not much else. No streaming although OH wants connection to the tv in case he can't get Sky. So what do I say about speed and what else will they ask?

I was hoping for a puppy but probably not a good idea as I may be 85 when it dies.

Spend around 350 on a windows laptop & you will have what you need. There will be laptops that look much the same up to around 900 but for what you want 350 is more than enough. You won't need to answer any questions just buy a laptop of whatever screen size you want for about that price. Thats it. You won't need to be in the shop for more than 10mins.

Thanks, OH has already been and he was asked questions, he won't use the internet, which is why I have to go. He took a younger neighbour last time.

Next question, how to transfer all info, files etc from this to the new one?

Memory stick I think but I'm sure Currys will do that for you if you want. I don't know if it costs extra.

Mine is a lenovo and came with free TV which we used last year in Europe and also in the UK WHEN WE HAD NO SAT THAT WOULD WORK.   My husband is a football nut so use it connected to tv to watch BT Sport (his team is in Europe)no problem just need internet. Because if you have BT sport even with sky you get it on you laptop/moblie.

Go along to a rescue centre, loads of dogs looking for good homes. That's what we have always done. Our latest one is lying sleeping beside me now. 5 years old when we got him, and he is now 12.

Thanks all. No, getting a dog of any age is not a good idea, when Harry goes that will be that.

I've got a Lenovo which is pretty good although this model is a tad slow. I've ditched Windows - I particularly loathe Win 10 - and loaded Ubuntu 16.04 (Linux) which is FREE and less prone to malware attacks. Most major utilities are available for Linux, so I use Firefox , Thunderbird and Openoffice.   I occasionally watch iPlayer if I miss something on TV, but I rarely take it on my outings in the van. I prefer a jigsaw !

Hope you get something that fits the bill. 350 should get you something decent.

Files - i.e. documents, pictures, videos, music and the like can be copied onto a USB stick and then onto the new laptop - however; programs such as Office (word processors, spreadsheets), picture/photo editor programs, video/music player/editor programs (and important programs such as antivirus/antispyware) will have to be installed/reinstalled from scratch (unless they are pre-installed)- hope you still have your registration keys for where necessary....

Ask at Currys when you buy your laptop. I think Currys will transfer data from old to new computer for you.

My son assures me that Maplins are a better outlet for computers, if there's one near you. What would I know?

I hope your Currys / PC World are a bit better than my local one. I wouldn't trust them to sell me a lightbulb - that's if they could be bothered.

Anyway, don't be worried about copying files etc... it's an essential skill, but so simple that even adults can do it. The main thing about Windows is learning how to customise it to YOUR needs and remove the things that you don't need.

And don't forget an Ad blocker.

They are ok, it's the only option anyway. I know how to customise/remove.
