Hello Folks, does anyone tow with a Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dci. If so are they any good? I should add that our van is only 875kg and 1200 max so not a heavy weight.

If your current C mAx 1.8 is a diesel, you will notice a lack of torque with the 1.5 Renault unit used in the Nissan, if you currently have a petrol, then the drive should be OK.  Do you know what max towing weight and nose weight Nissan quote for the 1.5 DCi as I am not sure, I know that the 2.0 DCi has a 1400kg tow weight from when I was looking.

I too am changing my citroen xsara picasso 1.6 HDi to a Qashqai 1.5 DCi, and am rather confused, as the citroen states kerbweight 1300kg and max towing weight 1300kg.  I am looking at an elddis avate 475 which is 1200 MTPLM, does this mean I am towing at 100% or going by the 85% rule, I would be allowed to tow 1195kg which is just under the elddis MTPLM???  We are new to this but have been looking into all the detail for over a year now.  Thanks in advance.

If the Qashqai 1.5 DCi as a max tow limit off 1200kg then you cannot go over that. But it as a good Kerb Weight of 1471kg. This makes it just under 82%. How a 1.5 DCi could put up with towing 3 ton's i don't no.

Manufacturers quote a max tow weight on the vehicles' ability to tow. This is why it quotes a max tow weight lower than the cars' kerb weight for the 1.5dci. 106bhp is a bit marginal for a caravan of that weight so expect to use the gears.

Thanks everyone, I would have rather stuck with the citroen but other half didn't like it!!  It had a towbar on it with double electrics so I think they have towed a caravan before, have my eye on a few vans just now but I will be sure to let you know how we get on!

Towing weights can confuse as they are theoretical maximum limits imposed by the manufacturer and don't necessarily reflect what you can do with your choice of tow-car.
The Picasso does have a tow limit of 1300kgs, but the info I found gives the car a kerbweight of 1313kgs. While towing at the full limit wouldn't be illegal, I'd not recommend it, being so close to the cars kerbweight.
The 85% guide target equates to 1116kgs for the Picasso (not sure how you've arrived at 1195kgs), so the Avante's max weight is a fair bit over, being about a 91% match. As your new-to-towing, try and keep to the 85% match (or close) if possible and the Avante match would be the highest I'd opt for, although I think you'll know you're pulling the weight.
To calculate 85% match, take kerbweight multiple by 85 and divide by 100.

The Qashqai does give a better match because of the weight (exact kerbweight varies by variant, which model?), but the 1.5dci will perhaps be a bit underpowered.

my neighbour has a 1.5 qasqai and he says it is fine on every day use but when he tows even his car trailer (single axle 6ft x 4ft)with a medium load he finds it really seems to be working very hard, i asked cos i liked them but after talking to him he thinks the sterling eccles we have would be too much for it.
i went for an x-trail instead, it has a 2000kg tow weight with plenty of torque.
just to say tho, i personally have not experienced tha qasqai towing so this is only based on his opinion.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for all your replies, and I take each one on board.  I just want to make sure we are safe with what we want to tow, we have been studying weights/kerbweights etc for more than a year now so I have really studied it, was just a bit confused as to the difference in the 2 cars with kerbweight/max towing weight being 1300/1300 & 1407/1200!!

It is a nissan qashqai Tekna we have got, I arrived at the 1195 on the citroen as a typo!! I meant 1105 as V5 said 1300kg.  We are seriously considering the elddis crown sceptre which was my very first choice as its going at just over half our budget and means we could get it now, obviously we have still to see the van and go through it with a damp meter, tap walls etc so I am trying my best not to get excited (but it is very hard) *stomps feet* I want my own caravan now!!  But seriously am not silly and the crown sceptre is 1200kg laden which is the max towing weight on the nissan qashqai but the kerbweight is 1407 (minimum I don't have the log book yet, it was my other half who wanted to change the car and he knew the implications of the tow/kerbweight when he changed so he knows that the car will have to work but he is ok with it, we shall see how it goes on our first journey out, he tows a lot of weight behind his engine at work (freight train driver) so he is ok with towing but again will keep you updated, we are hopefully gonna see the van next week x

Just came accross this old thread and was wondering how you got on towing your caravan. I have the Qashqai+2 1.5 dci and really do want to tow a caravan but worried it will struggle.

Have you thought of the Mitsubishi ASX? The same size as the Qashqai but with a 1400kg towing limit. The 1.8 diesel engine with 150bhp will easily cope with this weight. Fuel consumption is the same though as the 1.5 Qashqai. 2 or 4wd variants. At the moment you might struggle to find one second hand if that's what you are after.

We already have the Qashqai so not really an option for another 2 years when its time to upgrade. Never thought about a caravan until the last few months and now we just really want one!!
