Looking at caravans and trying to determine weight.

On our vehicle's V5 the Technical Permissible maximum towable mass of the trailer is 1500  braked (line 4 o1). So does this mean as beginners we take 85% of this and this is the MTPLM of the caravan?

Do we assume the V5 is correct as having spoken to Vauxhall they say because car is automatic it is just over 1600. But assume if stopped by police they would use the V5 data?

Thank you.

The 85% guideline is usually applied to the vehicle kerbweight not to the manufacturers maximum towing weight. I think you would have to go by the weight on the V5 as the maximum towing weight. If Vauxhall say that weight should be 1600kgs then they should have supplied that information to the DVLA!

Hi as an extra to Davids reply I would add that legaly you are allowed to tow up to the manufactorers max towable mass BUt personally I would stick to around the 85%to95% of the max kerbweight if you can

It is certainly going to be a more comfortable drive with towing ratio of less than 85%.  The big attraction of tourers is ease of moving between locations along with the comfort.

Definitely not!!!   This figure is, I believe, the mass of the heaviest trailer that the towcar is structurally adequate to tow and that it can restart on a 12% gradient.  It has nothing to do with safety.

The 85% guideline recommended by the Caravan Club and others for a reasonably safe outfit refers to the actual mass of the caravan as towed (i.e. the MIRO plus the junk you fill it with when you go on holiday) and the kerbweight of the towcar.

Cheers
Andrew
