We have a fault with the Xtrail that is not viable to fix, we have had a look around at 407 hdi, passat tdi, i have never fancied a Mondeo but whilst looking at a Passat i saw a Mondeo 2.0 tdci 115 ghia, its an 07 plate and i am quite impressed with it for the money being asked.

My question is we tow a Elddis Avante 505 mtlpm 1300 would the 115bhp be upto it or would we be better with a 130 bhp?

I have done a comparison on weights website but i also wanted a 'real' idea of how it performs.

Thanks Herald

The 115 mondeo will be well up for towing. The 130 would be great for dashing away from the lights but the 115 will have the torque you need to tow.

I think the passat is a great towcar too. When I researched the 407 I came to the conclusion it was not.

There is another thread current on the same topic which you might like to look at. However rest easy the Mondeo 115tdci 115does a fine job of towing and is never short of puff. I tow a 1450kg Hymer Nova with mine and have done for the last 5 years and to put it mildly it is superb. Once on the motorway and doing just over 55mph there is never any need to adjust the cruise control at all or even to change down unless traffic conditions necessitate doing so. It is extremely stable and returns an average of 35mpg whilst towing.

Been and had a viewing today was very impressed with the interior of the Mondeo even though the x trail is great it is a bit agricultural inside compared to the Ford. The only thing i thought was a bit of a let down was the noise from the diesel engine when cold, i thought the x trail was bad but this beat it. He did show me another Mondeo diesel to prove they are all that noisey?

We took it for a drive and was better than expected but still not sure its the car for us, on the plus side he offered me more for my Xtrail than first offered.

Going to look at a Passat and a Octavia tomorrow see what we find then

They are not as noisy when new. I have spent the last 3 months adding 100ml of two stroke oil to the diesel when I fill up ( ratio is 1 to 360 which means that there is only a trace of the 2stroke ) and I have been very impressed. The clatter from the emgine on starting has disappeared, it sounds like the engine did from new, the engine is quieter throughout it's range and I am now using something like 10% less fuel than I was before.

Hi just to update you we didn't buy the Mondeo thought the one we viewed was a bit to noisey for my liking when cold, and could not find another i liked.

We have been away this weekend and saw a passat tdi 130bhp for sale local to the site it has the Highline spec with full heated leather, and all the toys it was a couple of years older than the Mondeo but felt better built so we bought it and pick up Wednesday, hope it tows as well as the x trail does.

cheers herald
