Depends which model Sorento you are talking about. I have a 59 plate auto and in 2011 the average mileage was 23 miles to the gallon. That was over 8666 miles of which 3599 miles were towing. That ranged from about 18mpg on short journeys to 29 mpg on a long solo journey, towing averaged about 22mpg. These figures come from always brimming the tank and keeping a careful note of miles covered.

Around 23 to the gallon (solo). I havn't checked the towing figures as yet. I think i have become more aware of the situation because of the cost of fuel.

The post was to initiate replies from other Sorento owners, to see how their fuel consumption compared.

I wouldn't say that 23mpg towing is particularly poor for a vehicle of that size & weight. If safety is your priority it's something you'll have to put up with . I note the latest sorento models with the 2.2litre engine are more economic but the bodyweight is rather lower . It seems an odd situation modern caravans are getting heavier whilst modern towcars are getting lighter (in order to get maximum fuel economy).  

Yes thats's about right. I was getting the same from my 04 plate 2.5XS Auto when I had mine. I realised for the amount of towing that I was doing I had somewhat over egged it in the tow car department! I swapped to the Passat that returns 42mpg solo and low 30's when towing.

I got fed up filling the tank every 10 days,lucky to get more than 400 miles on a tank. The Passat comfortably does 600+(solo)

Our Sorento is a manual,(one of the last of the old model 59 plate) so has 168bhp. We get around 30-32 solo and towing probably 20-24, these are only rough estimates as my wife uses it daily, she is not exactly a slow driver!

I only drive it occasionally Usually when we go off caravanning. 

We tend to use my saab 93 (diesel) for weekend use as it does around 40mpg

I don't think it is too bad for a heavy car and it certainly is a very good towcar.( No I don't want a mondeo!)

I see your profile say's you drive one so what is your fuel consumption,i have fitted a tuning box and can see an improvement but didn't buy a 2ton beast for it's economy,but to pull my van with ease and safety.

I bought mine from Griffinmotortuning.net this chap is called Taff he's based in Ireland and has his own garage and has a vast knowledge on all things Kia related.

I used to have a Shogun on an 03 plate.  I could no longer justify to myself putting in £100 per week just to get to work and do a bit of running around.

It got to the stage that we were afraid to go off out anywhere for the day because of the fuel situation.

The vehicle was there to be used 365 days a year, but I worked out that it was probably on towing duties for only 18 days of that year.

Yes, it was a superb towing vehicle, but I was paying for that all year round.  I  now tow with an 07 Mondeo.  It's nowhere near as good as the Shogun was at towing, but capable none the less ....... and I have a lot more money left in my pocket at the end of the month.

I got a tuning box off ebay which worked a treat - an extra 10 - 15% fuel economy, more umph as well especially when towing !.

I also swap the air filter for a K & N which will save about 8 % on your fuel bills. Clean them every couple of years -  good for 100.000 miles !
