Although Tango55 appears to have caused some offence(can't imagine why he got SUCH an adverse reaction) I do think there is a negative side to having all these things done automatically - speed, gears, lights, wipers, sat nav, even lane & distance control etc, it is likely to increase the likelihood of loss of concentration and even sleep inducing.

Me, just like to play with the pedals and twiddle the knobs.

And of course these aids come at a price.

I thought the thread was lying a bit dormant actually so at least it's livened it up a bit and gained some interest at least

I put my post in merely as a joke really because to be quite honest if cars hadn't progressed the way they have we still be driving round in vehicles today with cross ply tyres and the absence of power steering and rear parking sensors. I would actually consider having a car with cruise control as I have heard nothing but praise for it but actually, it's just that I've never drove a car with the facility to actually appreciate the benefits of it.

Serious bit of back peddling me thinks, but I ain't buyin it.

Now look what you've done, the threads gone dormant again. At least I have proved a point if nothing else that people just love a bit of wee banter occasionally.

you would be hard pressed to find a car without all the extras in it these days so might aswell use them.............my best car was a mark2 escort.. i remember puting a radio in it a year after i bought it....the left hand wing mirror was an option as was the cigar lighter...but it put a big smile on your face when you drove it.....i would buy a basic car today if they made one...my car must have about 800miles of wireing on it. and its just a cheap family car...were will it all end?????

I'm a young man who enjoys driving and riding motorcycles and for our second car I like to have a small sporty fast manual car that I can 'drive'. However for our main large family car I won't even consider a car that doesn't have an auto box and cruise. I do a massive amount of miles for work (mainly motorway) and we do quite a lot of towing with the caravan, so an auto with cruise just makes so much sense! I am a total auto/cruise convert, it makes towing and sticking to motorway limits a breeze. I get better fuel economy due to the constant speeds with cruise (I have a heavy right foot normally)

I am an old bloke that likes driving and I too have a sporty little number (with proper rear wheel drive) but I still won't use the toys in our grown ups car because I don't like them. Unfortunately I have to pay for them to lie dormant in the car for you guys to use as mostly they are standard equipement.

I don't want:
Auto gearbox
cruise
Max speed control
sat nav
auto wipers
ABS
any form of traction control
A device to tell me air pressure in the tyres is ok
A device to tell me oil is ok
A fancy radio
CD player stacking or otherwise
A thingy to tell me it needs servicing
etc, etc.

I do like power steering though.

Cruise control whilst towing - good
Auto wipers whilst raining - good
Auto climate control - good
Auto dimming mirror with compass - good
5th gear cruise control set at 62 mph - good (clock reads 60 mph, sat nav says 59 mph, wife says slow down!!)
5th gear Cruise control 250 miles at 31 mpg towing 1300kgs loaded - good.
The more i don't have to do and concentrate on pointing the vehicle in the right direction - good also
The not so good Drivers whom do not see see big white boxes being towed on motorways.

Personally would always choose an auto box, but like the thrill fo control with a manual so rarely have auto boxes.

Bring back chokes I say! And who needs syncromesh on first gear? Only lazy drivers. In my first car I had to double de-clutch to get first gear. And the windscreen wipers worked from a rubber tube running from the manifold, so you never knew what speed they would run at. And the lights ran from a 6 volt battery. And the indicator was a little arm that popped out (sometimes) and lit up (very occasionally). But apparently some of you dislike progress and would like to go back to those days. Not me! I love my cruise control and sat nav and two speed electric wipers et al.

Me too.  Just towed our caravan for the first time last weekend with our new (to us) series 5 BMW.  Love the automatic box, although I did try and press the non existant clutch in a couple of times when I approached a rounabout .  I think it makes towing much better and the cruise control is very good.

Are they lights in the doors so that when you open the car door the light shows whether you have parked near a puddle or not?  Or is that too simple an answer?

Usually a light under the door mirror that illuminates the area around the door so you can avoid jumping out of the car and into a puddle. Probably not on every model and the handbook will cover everything so you may or may not have it on yours depending on the model. If you have they should come on when you unlock the car if the lights are set to 'auto' I think.

Re Cruise Control - I find it great when towing purely to stop the speed creeping up, my car only has 5 gears and if I set it at around 63 the sat nav says 60 and all is well.

When travelling solo I find I can drive more economical to drive without as I can read the road etc. Whereas the CC will increase throttle input for slight inclines a driver may not.

Looks like we were typing the same answer at the same time.
