When you have a dedicated towing wiring loom fitted to a vehicle with a computerised can-bus system, they have to install the appropriate software to detect when the towing plugs are connected and disconnected. The message relays information to the vehicle's charging circuit so the alternator increases the charging output for the leisure battery then resets to default again when the towing plug is disconnected. The software used at a dealer is the correct software specifically for that vehicle whereas towbar fitters will use a software that's universal to most vehicles over a range of vehicles very much the same as breakdown companies do to detect any fault codes when required. It may be more costly at a dealer but at least you know that it's dedicated 100%.
Tango, no software needed. The module is already ready to accept towbar it just needs configuring. For a ford this is just any basic diagnostic tool, body controller, select 13 pin (or 7), push button, confirm.
It takes 30 seconds, my local dealer asked for £85, local independent did it for £10.
Dealer has fixed charge for use of diagnostic, no matter how easy the process is and a min labour charge. Some may say rip-of some may pay for the peace of mind.
Back from our 2 week stay in Llandudno everything fine with the new tow bar, in fact lights on caravan were brighter than before. ONE THING we forgot was a new reg number plate for the back of the van. This was pointed out to us by chap in the next van, Halfords wanted our V5 paper which nobody carries, went to a small deale and he just checked hubby's driving licence then made one for the same price as Halfords.
Garage also fitted a new coupling? as we have 2 leads from the van and towbar only had one....nice thing was he didn't charge for it.

Yikes! I have a new Audi A6 allroad, it has parking sensors and the trick chassis control. I paid £460 for a fully dedicated and programmed electrics with a removable swan necked tow bar fitted on my drive. The guy was brilliant, very professional, can't recommend him highly enough.
ps - not all Audi's are pre wired, but mine did have the rear valance pre cut.

just wondering which tower you went for, i have spent a few weeks researching before splashing out, i ended up going for the Westfalia removable tow bar with dedicated electrics from tow bar express for £480, i wanted a tow bar that was 100% unnoticeable when not in use
