Just finished putting our 1990 Silverline Nova princess caravan into hibernation. Husband has had the battery charger on with the battery still attached to 'van with rocker selector switch off & mains switch under seat off.

When I checked inside the fridge there is a huge block of ice and I can't open the freezer door. The green switch was in the on position & dial at 7. I assumed that if the switches on the caravan power supply were off the fridge would be off as well.

Is this normal on older caravans???

No this is not normal. The fridge on 12v should only run when connected to the vehicle (12s socket) and the engine running. It sound like someone has wired it up wrong.

Thanks Rustybus, that's what I thought. We haven't been able to run it on gas either so think it's time to get it looked at.

Superbird. Is the van connected to the mains via EHU??

If not then the fridge is faulty. If the EHU is connected then the fridge may well run, I can not understand why the battery would power the fridge under normal circumstances. Strange......

Van not connected via EHU to mains.

Battery charger was attached to battery which is in situ on caravan. Switch under seat OFF & rocker selector switch in middle.

It's definitely a mystery, I think there's a fault somewhere, it is a very old 'van though.

if that green switch on the fridge is lit up when in the on position it must be getting a mains feed from somewhere or you have a major problem if the van is not on hookup. Curious as to why you would use a separate charger why not put the caravan onto a mains hookup and use the onboard charger.
