Hi,

I wonder if anyone could help me please.
I'm just about to purchase a Vango Icarus 500 Deluxe tent online, that I saw in a deal from GoOutdoors.
Do you have experience with this tent in hot weather?
I live in southern Spain, so I don't need to cope with rain :), however hot weather and sometimes wind could be an issue. Most of the reviews I read were referring to bad weather conditions.. I think condensation is usually a problem, but as this tent has 2 full mesh doors I was hoping that it could serve us well.. I really like the size and all the features, just worried a bit whether the ventilation will be good enough or not. Other tent I saw with pretty much the same features was Outwell Nevada 5, but I didn't find many reviews on that.
I would be grateful for any opinion, experience please!

Many thanks,
Monika

Vango have added more ventilation to their 2017 models...don't know about the Icarus but I know the Vango Capri 400, 500, 600 and the XL's do ..these are all AIRBEAM tents.

There is ventilation at both the top and bottom of the tent. I know because we are ordering the 2018 model and are conscious that when we're in Provence it will be very hot.

Any polyester tent is going to be very hot indeed in a hot climate. The Icarus doesnt have great ventilation, it is Vango's bottom range and the 'deluxe' is simply a model for Go Outdoors.

The Outwell Nevada is a better tent all round with a lot more usable space inside. It will still get really hot in a hot climate though, but may be a little breezier than the Icarus, which gets really hot due to it's tiny size.

Ideally you want a polycotton or cotton tent but these are expensive

Thank you very much for your thoughts! Do you know when Vango will release the new 2018 range of tents? I only saw a few so far. Also do you think its worth the wait for deals in next spring or I can generally find better deals nowdays? The icarus 500 deluxe is on sale for 260, and I saw the nevada 5 for 300. To be honest I don't want to spend more at the moment. Size wise these two models look the same, and I'm not to worried about it as this is only my husband I who will use the tent so I'm sure we will have enough space in both.. At present we have a smaller tent from dechatlon without standing hight and sew in groundsheet.
Weather wise as summers are very hot and dry here, during the day we are out of the tent most of the time, the main issue is whether the tent will cool down enough for the night. We usually camp by the see and there is pretty much all the time a nice breeze there, but still the weather is hot.. I just would like to pick something that suits our needs, gives us some extra space and we can survive the nights without getting boiling hot during the night. :)

If you've had a good look inside both and feel they are big enough then it is down to personal preference, though the Outwell looks to be better made. Neither would be on my short list due to the amount of space wasted by the sloping front. I'm doubtful because you said you want something with extra space yet have chosen out of 2 really cramped tents.

My sister in law has an Icarus and I was amazed at how cramped it was for her and her 2 children - they spent most of the week we were away in my tent lol. There is just over 1.3m of usable living space before the sharp slope of the front means you can't stand up or use that space apart from ground level storage. Also means if it's been wet you get soaked (as does the inside of your tent) when you open the door. The Outwell does at least have a small canopy over the side door which may help on wet exit/entrance. It also has a fold flat front entry which I really like, and better quality poles. The Outwell also has a very slightly larger bedroom and the bedroom Inner is a better quality one than the Icarus Deluxe (though I believe the older Icarus/Iris may have had a better quality one)

There are porches available for both tents which add loads of space -the Icarus porch is huge. I see Go Outdoors have currently discontinued the porch. By the way, earlier in the year the Icarus was 199 at GO. The Nevada Porch is great in that it also changes the front of the tent to a flat front, though it is an open porch with no door available. Still, great for all your cooking gear

You could also look at the Kampa Brean 4 or 5 Endurance Tent, the Outwell Blakeley/Birdland, Kampa Hayling 4 or any number of other tents at the same kind of price which are more spacious than the two you mentioned.

You havent said how long your camps would be - longer camps usually require more space.

My choice in that price range (well very slightly higher but taking into account all you have said) would be something along the lines of the Outwell Silverhill 500. Very spacious bedrooms, steel poles, small canopy, reasonable living space, good fabric, thermal coating on the bedroom inners and - a personal 'must have' of mine, mesh on all the doors.

On the downside it is also a Go Outdoors exclusive - it looks to be based on the Flagstaff 5

I can't stress enough how important it is to have a look and try of tents before buying them, but I appreciate for you that could be really difficult

A natural fabric will always be the coolest option.

The colour also needs to be considered...a dark colour retains heat, which is why many of the cotton tenst are in lighter colours. Look at some of the ranges like Obelisk (NL) and Vaude (Badawi).
VANGO and OUTWELL are really good brands but there are more out there. Remember people like Go OUtdoors by in bulk and sell cheap.

The camping exhibition at the NEC is 17th - 22nd October.

Make a check list and go and ask for advice from the exhibitors.

Have a look at the Vango SOLACE, Polycotton, airbeam...nice tent. We almost went for this but it was too heavy and overkill for our needs.

We have a pre-order for the Capri 500 airbeam. THis has much to do withe the design and the living layout and how we would use it. We don't need a big living area but wanted a biggish canopy option.

Have a try with Obelink. Their Hypercamp tents are good and they do air beams.
Good quality cotton.....but you won't get a polycotton one for the price of a vango.
As you are in Spain, the Euro website (in English) is here:

Obelink EU

The Spanish website is here:

Obelink es

Their tents are very good quality for the price. Pity they are phasing out pyramid tents for airbeams though.

Thank you very much for all of your comments and ideas. Originally I really liked the Icarus but after your comments and another deeper look I don't think we will go ahead with that. I think in this weather conditions we have here it would be just too hot. I wish it would have more ventilation but never mind.. I was looking at the Outwell Silverhill 500, and I actually quite liked that, thank you! Also I saw the Palm Cost 600 for only a little mit more. It could be a bit big for us but I really liked the layout.. any experience with these pls?

Take a look at the new range of Coleman tents which have blackout inners. Apparently these keep the tent cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather.

This one is just an example. They have other models as well.

This is almost a copy of the Vango designs.

We're sold on the Capri 500 Airbeam, thi has blackout...in fact the fabric is dark grey as they found the black version to be too dark (when tested on human guinea pigs).

We looked at the Icarus a few years ago but have held out until the technology of the airbeams was proven. The initial problems have been overcome and the new phase of airbeams are excellent.
