I`ll start it off as just had one of the best days out I`ve had for a long, long time

and it was free entry

RAF Cosford Museum

Based in Shropshire - not far from Telford, Wolverhampton or Stafford

Although its free to get in you are `invited` to buy a programme but its not compulsory.

I spend the best part of 3 hours looking at the fantastic exhibits

From military aircraft (English, American, Russian and Japanese to name a few) to passenger aircraft to missiles to tanks to uniforms...

spread over 4 huge hangars its a superb place to visit

can`t believe I`ve never been before as passed it loads over the years

it has a cafe and a restaurant but there is also an area where you can eat your own food in order to keep costs down

also a brilliant interactive area for the kids

big kids and little kids will love this place

I`m definitely going again

HIGHLY recommended

if you`ve had a cheap/free great day out let everyone know and add your comments.....

National Railway Museum, York, free to get in, enough to see to keep you occupied for several hours. We took my elderly Dad there a couple of months ago, booked one of their mobility scooters at a fiver for the day to help get around, shuttle road-train runs from the carpark down to York Minster for a small ticket fee. He really enjoyed it and we have just booked him a hotel room to revisit next April.

Plenty of seating and cafes inside the museum, a bit pricey if you want a full cooked meal, groups and school parties with packed lunches can book a separate 'education room' other individuals often sat and ate their sandwiches on the 'station benches' around the great hall.

A good one for a cold or wet day, as its all undercover apart from the playground and station yard.

Julia

Milford Haven Maritime Museum

Not free but very cheap. A great way to while away an hour or two. Has stairs but also a chair lift to get you upstairs if needed.

Spend a day in Coventry and you can visit the Coventry Transport Museum and the Herbery Art Gallery and Museum within 10-15 walk of each other. Especially good for kids, lots of hands on stuff and both free.

Hulls Museum Quarter is great. A collection of museums and all free.

We thought the Streetlife Museum was really good with Victorian and Georgian shop fronts and historic vehicles. There was even a simulator ride demonstrating what it must have been like to travel in a horse drawn carriage over rutted roads. There were also some Victorian Penny Arcade games.

In the same area there was also a museum dedicated to William Wilberforce who was instrumental in the abolition of slavery and a Natural History type museum.

I`m pretty sure that any of the `National` museums are free to get in ( National railway museum, Royal Armouries at Leeds certainly are ) Also the National Coal Mining museum at Horbury is also another free entry place that by all accounts is well worth the visit as far as I know

The main museum in Liverpool is free to get in, they have done special interactive things for the kids too. A great day out.
