Cycling - The Monsal Trail is on your doorstep, you can walk this as well down into Bakewell, it takes you through all the tunnels that they have reopened.
Carsington Water a short drive away. you can walk round the lake, lots to do for kids, watersports etc. Bakewell is a nice town as is Buxton. Matlock bath has The Heights of Abraham which has a cable car to go up and you could always walk down, also a theme park next door catering for the smaller ones. There is also a very nice riverside walk nearby which also takes you as far as Monsal Head, here is a very nice pub with amazing views over the viaduct and up the valley. The food is very good too and in the cooler weather the stables bar has an open fire, very cosy. J x
