Hi all

For too long Caravan.Trailer tent and Motorhome Dealers and manufacturers have been getting away with fobbing us all off with excuses for not doing certain things needed under warranty or supposed to have been done under the pre-sales prior to collection and you only discover these faults when you use them for the first time only to find that the dealer makes up some form of excuse to not carry out the necessary repairs now considering the amount of money we pay for any of these units we do not have an OMBUSMAN to take these complaints to when talks break down between the dealer and or manufacturer.

I therefore appeal to all to see whether we could get a petition together to approach goverment with a view to setting up an OMBUSMAN to protect our rights after all these units cost more than a washing machine yet they are covered I would be very grateful to hear what you think.

Here is an example of what happened to a friend of mine who purchased a new Swift caravan he got it home went away with it first time usage and the cooker igniter was not working he contacted the dealer and was politely informed if you go to poundland and get a hand igniter saves you coming to the dealership now remember this van cost him nearly £16.000 is rediculous but shows what were up against.

many thanks

Don

Maybe the suggestion was made so that thecvsn wouldn't have to go in for a small issue and the problem would get fixed on the next service as I know this is what our dealer would do

Not very impressed that the dealer didn't check it but wouldn't you test these things before going away?

Hi all apologies for the spelling of Ombudsman

With regards to checking van before going away this Swift caravan was only out the workshop the day before you do not expect to have to recheck it 24 hours later but still does not detract the fact that we need an Ombudsman to act for us all or don't you agree.

regards

Don

Well, from past experience with everything from cars to computers, I would definitely recheck it before using it in ernest. I recently returned a DVD player under warranty only for it to be sent back without having been fixed or, indeed, looked at at all! I eventually got a new one out of them once they admitted their error.

Regarding the Ombudsman:

1) Whose going to pay for him/her (well, obviously us one way or another),

2) What is he/she going to do that Trading Standards can't.

3) Where do you stop? Ombudsman for tents? trailer tents?

Hi

In answer to your questions

1. The Leisure industry

2. One of the main things an ombudsman can do is make a descision re who is at fault and make the party responsable put it right this is not always the case with trading standards they tend to take a more laid back and advisory policy unless it is dangerous

3. Now your getting rediculous an ombudsman can cover a broad range from tents through to motorhomes for example Leisure Ombudsman

In conclusion I find that your comments make me believe you must work for a dealer or manufacturer in the Leisure industry. If everyone takes the same apathetic view as yourself then nothing will get done to protect consumers

There are a lot of people out there that have had or do have problems re their tent.caravan.motorhome I for one have heard of horrendous stories even after approaching trading standards and end up with no help whatsoever you wouldnt get away with it if it was a car so whats the difference. The big difference is some of our products cost more than a car but the industry lacks teeth to protect consumers

That is why we do not have tolls in Scotland anymore because we fight for it I therefore now will approach this from a differrent angle for example Caravan club etc thank you all for your time

regards

Don

1. The leisure industry will surely just pass the costs on to the consumer.

2. Fair enough. You are as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

3. Perhaps I should have put a smiley at the end of that one. It was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

I most certainly do not work for a dealer or in the leisure industry. Until I retired some years ago I was in consumer protection, so I do know a bit about Trading Standards policies.

As for apathetic, I have always found that retailers have been more than happy to sort problems out. Forums such as this also help.

My last comment on this thread as it's starting to get personal.

i had to take my dealer to court to get mine sorted out. it was lucky that i had a friend that worked there that was willing to stand up in court. it was proved that the pdi was never done on any new caravan as that was how costs were cut. after traveling 10 miles a manufacturing fault caused 8K of damage, if pdi was done it would have been spotted. dealers seem to be getting away with all sorts. now i dont say every dealer is the same  but the one i used has had many people that have had to follow my route. it costs them more too as the 8K was paid plus 2K comp to me and court costs.
