The site we use has had electric meters fitted does anyone have any experience of using these meters with a caravan especially on cold nights. I know it will depend on usage but just wondered if anyone has experienced this as it is a first for us.

I might be wrong. But I think in the UK it is unlawful to sell electricity through a meter at a higher rate than it costs the provider - ie the site owner. I believe that is why site fees normally include electricity and it makes no difference whether you use lots or none.

The maximum resale price is the most that anyone can charge for re-supplying gas or electricity which has already been bought from an authorised supplier. It is set by the Utility Regulator.
Anyone who charges more than the maximum resale price may face civil proceedings for the recovery of the amount overcharged, and may be required to pay interest on the amount overcharged.
From 6th September 2007 the maximum price at which gas or electricity may be resold is the same price as that paid by the person who is reselling it ("the reseller"), including any standing charges.

Thanks oxter I presume they will have to say what they are charging per unit, they are issuing pay as you go smart cards.

Oxter is right in his reply

However, I think a lot of sites charge over the odds. Some give the price including electric and without it. These prices can vary from 3 to 5 per night. How any site can say how many kilowatts have been used unless on a meter is beyond me. I've even seen electricity charges dearer for peak period (summer) than for over the cold winter months. How is that worked out.

Just checked my supply and I'm charged .1397p per kw that's one hell of a lot of electric. I don't use that much at home.

Depending on who the site purchase their electricity through the cost can vary. If a site charges for electricity you are entitled to ask how much it is per unit. We charge .14p per unit this year which is the first increase in 3 years.
Some people find that gas fires give off a better heat than electric ones and therefore don't use more in the winter.

Thats not good Harry, we have just had a smart meter fitted at home and according to the monitor we have only used 7.00 in a full week.

Thanks Ang/Ken good to have input from the managers.

Wish I could find someone to supply me with electricity at .1397p per unit!!

I think you'll find it is 0.1397, or 13.97p per kwh.

We stayed at a site last year and were 'advised' by the owner that we had to buy a card for electric ( pre-paid). When we put this 5 card in the meter the readout showed 13!! Seems the previous occupant had plenty of credit, when we mentioned this to the owner he basically said 'tough' and 'luck of the draw'. We'll probably stay again as it is handy for our purpose BUT we will be checking the meter before we fork out for a card.

Ive seen a few posts about meters and it seems cheaper than the usual charge of around 3-50 a night, but will they when fitting meters reduce the nightly charge by 3-50,i don't think so.

Thanks everyone bnmuk funnily enough the pitch charge hasn't gone down, I suppose with the souring price of electric it was inevitable.

You have to bear in mind that the nightly charge for EHU is not just for the electricity used. The sites are just trying to get their installation and running costs back as well.
