Just back from a couple of weeks trip through Belgium, France, Germany & The Netherlands.
I've just requested a couple of unlisted sites to be added
and I'll add my reviews ASAP. Meanwhile, part 1..
1. P&O Ferry to Rotterdam. Checking in and boarding were slow, but completed on time. We had an 'outside' cabin -not that there was much to see. Very comfy – one thing to note was that it only had continental 230V sockets.
Ferry had plenty of bars and restaurants – all expensive, but you could get a reasonable beer. There was live entertainment in the form of a 4 piece band. They were dire!
2. Ypres. I don't usually book in advance, but this time I did. Just as well, it was 'full' – but a few spaces were still unoccupied (no shows?). The town itself has a lot of building works. This is probably in preparation for the 2018 commemorations. It will be very busy next year. I like Ypres, but it feels that it is just becoming a cog in the wheel of the WW1 nostalgia industry.
3. LeNouvion en Thierache . This is a story in itself.
Note, The site is listed in the camp site search, but Le Nouvion is not in the list of towns.
We arrived at the Camp municipal du Lac du Conde without a reservation, but no problem getting a (tarmacked) pitch. Just after we arrived, another UK couple arrived in a new motorhome. The man had a thick folder of documents and explained that they were new to the game and so had booked everything in advance and printed all the documentation – fair enough. He had booked to stay two nights.
After we had both pitched, the warden came to explain in part French, part English, but mostly gestures, that the other man had specifically booked a hardstanding. (other hardstandings were closed for maintenance work). Would I swap pitches in return for a free night. Sounded like a good deal. I got a grass pitch with hardcore base for the van, a good view and nearer to the loo block and path into town.
The town has 2 supermarkets and a few other shops, but not a lot else. We booked a table at a restaurant that came highly recommended, and in spite of light rain, walked there that evening. The meal was very good, except that my steak was so underdone(not even rare), that I sent it back. It came back perfectly cooked.
Later the manager came to talk to us and when she found that we were staying at the campsite, insisted on driving us back in her car as it was still raining.
The other UK couple? They left early the next morning having stayed less than a day.
More later, and maybe a photo or two..
Two drifters off to see the world.
