What is the optimum size to resize photos so they don't distort the width of the message pane?

Well I don't know about anyone else but if they stretch the page I personally don't bother looking at them. Scrolling back and forth is a total pain

Pros and cons. On our normal size laptop there's still plenty of spare width, before scrolling is needed, even at 1280. Same on my 7" tablet, and 4" phone, the full site just resizes for the available screen. I rarely bother with mobile optimized sites.

Length, well, you either like pics in posts or not. Personally, I think they add a lot to the narrative.

In landscape, scrolling across to see much bigger than 1280 is a drag, that is true (no pun intended).

I upload my pics from my i-phone to my lap top, then again from lap top to to my Picassa albums.
When I open it up in there, this pic states 3264 x 2448 pixels - 4187KB.

Right click on it, click "Copy image URL", then paste (that URL) directly in the photo box on here (Mountain Icon, next to the smiley face icon, at the top of this reply box).

The result is this...

I've got no idea about pixels, KB's or what the hell Mike was on about with mention of 640 and 1280 etc (although I can visually see the difference, of course!) and I can only guess that whatever needs to be done, in my case, is done automatically, as all my pics seem to come out the same size, and thankfully, I do diddly squat to make them fit!

I dread the day I have to start concerning myself with KB pixels, or whatever they're called! I fear I'd have to retire my UKCS account! (Stop cheering at the back, there!!)

Mucker, all my work educating you on tech! And yet I fear there is still much to be done

Picassa is clearly doing some re-sizing there, automatically. If I save your pic it shows on my machine as 640x480, more or less the same size as my first vineyard pic above.

FB does something similar. I can put up a big 4608x3072 6Mb pic from my DSLR camera, and it shows at around 400x something, unless I expand it.

All I'm saying is that sometimes, size adds to the experience. I'm told.

BTW, does Picassa not do an iOS version? You could upload direct then. I do the main back up to our laptop when we're home, but for a daily check-in, do it from the phone or tablet.

Like Mucker I use Picassa 3 Web album to upload my pictures too and like him have never bothered about the size as Picassa seems to size the photos to suit when I post pictures on UKCS forums. I have listed the difference between what the Picassa web album shows for the picture and the size of the photo as held in my Picture file on my laptop. Looks as though Picassa does a considerable compression job when you load it up onto the web album (certainly nothing to do with me as like Mucker I wouldn't have that much of a clue on resizing).

My wife and I each use a different camera and the posted size does come out slightly different as below.I hope someone can explain why it does it although as long as it works I'm happy.

First with my Agfa Bridge Camera (Picassa shows 1600 X 1200 pixels - 214KB)The size on my picture file on my laptop shows 4320 X 3240 and 3.6MB

Second with my wife's Sony DSLR (Picassa shows 1600 X 1071 pixels - 267KB) The sizeon my \picture file on my laptop shows 3872 X 2592 and 2.76MB

Well, clearly Picassa does something automatically, or via a default setting option in it, whereas Photobucket doesn't. I've no idea why that setting/automatic feature results in a different ratio between the two cameras, unless the DSLR is designed to take a slightly more widescreen picture

They'd know over on the camera forum.

I upload pics mainly to FB these days, and they take the originals and do the re-sizing themselves.

Out of interest J, how do you like the bridge as opposed to the DSLR? I often think the best camera is the one you take with you. Does the slightly smaller size encourage that?

Hi Mike,

I had the DSLR first and although it does take great photos I bought the (not very expensive ) bridge camera for a number of reasons,

1) As you say in size it is much smaller and lighter than the DSLR and thus more convenient is certain situations

2) The Bridge has a 16X optical zoom which is far more than the DSLR which has an 18 to 70 mm lens and again is very useful in certain situations.

3) I can take video with the bridge.

and 4) I can resize and save on the bridge which I can't do on the DSLR. Although I can zoom to see what it looks like on the DSLR I can't then save it but have to use the crop facility on Picassa.

Given the chance again I would probably not have bought the bridge camera I have but I am a big fan of them in general and if it comes to a point where I need to buy a new camera would almost certainly go for a better quality bridge camera rather than a DSLR as I use the camera for holidays and family photos and a bridge is perfectly well adapted for what I want.

John
