I have been looking at buying roof bars to fit my Mk7 fiesta 5 door. Genuine Ford ones are £110 plus a further  2 x £58 for Thule cycle carriers. Total £226.

What's your view on this ? I think it seems expensive. Or am I out of touch with the modern world?

Depends on the quality as well and the value of your bikes. So don't forget the security aspect. With my bike I always use extra locks.
