Hello, is there anyone who knows if there exists a comprehensive list of Municipal Camp Sites in France. From previous experience of staying on these sites we have found them to be of a reasonable standard. Alternatively of any good inexpensive sites around the Loire Valley Chateau. Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Welcome

I don't think so but the Caravan Club Europe 1 book has hundreds including Municips with members' comments and prices which help you decide. http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/ There's also a book - Le Guide Officiel Camping and Caravanning which lists 10340 - yes 10340 French sites but it's in French of course.  Google it - you can buy online.

Also Michelin Guide and hosts of others.  See also http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/county.asp?region=France on here under the tab campsite search at the top of the page.

Hope that helps and good luck

Depends what time of year you are going but the ACSI Card discount scheme has prices from €11 a night. There is a book called "Le Guide Officiel, CampingCaravanning" which lists over 10000 campsites in France and I reckon it would have most of the Municipals Campsites in. Why not do a search here as it might through up just what you require.

As Oxter and David suggest, try here first.
Google lists camping-municipal.fr and camping-municipal.org.
Nutgone, a UKCS member currently in France, appears to be quite happy with his copy of Le Guide Officiel - see entry for Sunday 18th here.

You can also use google maps to find caampsites in any particular area.I don't know if it gives you a comprehensive list but it's certainly a starting point.

Someone else was looking too but without success see http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1550281

Would this be what you are after?

http://www.camping-municipal.org/  However having clicked on one of the campsites listed, despite the website title, I'd say it was not a municipal, but tell me what you think.

Edit: Pardon Google's French translation but it claims to be Municipal vis.

The Muni Campsites in France

The campsites are 2140 municipal reception areas (as of 1 January 2009) throughout France. They are for more than half ranked 2 and 20% ** 3 *** and more. The campsites are simple human dimension and very economical, managed by local governments.
Despite the popularity of the French for camping, campsites municipal suffer despite their advantages (The Price!) A form of disenchantment. This disenchantment is quickly forgotten once the gem found: a municipal campground with 4 or 5 cabins or mobile homes! No more parks to tourists's 100 mobile homes, you will be really green. Some you will also enjoy the swimming pool ... For instance our cards include a 4 ****... Equipped with 24 slots .. including rentals.
The Municipal terribly lacking visibility on the Internet: nothing is done to them and only a few bold drown in the mass of private campsites.
That's why we added the municipal campsites on our maps, marked with an M and launched the site.

So if you really want from cheaper, and take advantage of this economy going in the restaurant or doing more activities, local authorities take care of you in the municipal camping!

There's a lovely site called 'Le Moulin Fort' which is just down stream from Chenonceaux, and a good place to see Azay La Rideau and a few others from.

You could hire kyaks on this site and paddle under the arches of Chenonceaux......watch out for the midges though.

It was a lovely Dutch couple who owned it. I recall we arrived after a long journey and quite late in the evening, they were enjoying a meal on the terrace and asked us to join them to share a bottle of wine.......it was a lovely place.

You could try this website: http://www.campingfrance.com/UK

It is searchable by area and by various other criteria and lists municpals as well.  We've previously stayed at the municipal at Amboise which is nicely situated on an island in the river but within walking distance of the town.

We also have a copy of the Michelin Camping France book which also lists municipals and commercial sites.

Me again, on the subject of French municipal sites and places we have discovered and love:

One of our favourite sites and an excellent stop over if going further East or South, and a perfect base to explore the vineyards of Burgundy.

Savigny Les Beaune - Pretty village with a chateau, a fountain ,a cafe, an ace bread shop....it's just 1k outside Beaune and there's a huge E'Leclerc supermarche with a petrol station.

The site is hidden away and is little more than a huge field sheltered with trees, and a tiny stream running alongside.but the facilities are superb.

This used to be a municpal site but is now privately owned and has changed its name to: Camping Premier Pres.

Two municiple sites I can recommend are:
Bayeux (Northern France)
Montoire (Loire)

TIP: Many municipal sites are on cheap land...next to railway lines or sports stadiums NOT GOOD. In La Cloche a freight train passed every 15mins, all night. In Chalons sur Soane, there was rock concert on in the stadium !!!

If anyone can advise me on sites nr Chatel/ Morizine I'd be grateful. We've camped in France for the last 15yrs, but are not familiar with sites in the Rhone Alps.

Please just go on Amazon & buy a copy of "Le Guide Officiel", it lists almost 11'000 campsites in France, including the municipals.
I've found this to be one of the most valuable things I bought on my trip. I'm out here now, on my own, & the "Le Guide" & my borrowed sat-nav have been my most valuable assets. I seriously sleep with them both in my sleeping bag at night, anything else is easily expendable.

I'd agree with Nutgone - it's what I've been recommending for quite a while, and contains details of EVERY campsite in France.  If it fits the description of a campsite, then it's in there!  This includes the smallest municipals, Camping a la Ferme, Aire Naturelles, right up to the biggest all-singing, all-dancing four star sites.

If you can't get it on Amazon, then you should be able to buy it in any Maison de Presse, or the Journals and newspapers section of supermarkets.

Just for interest, how much did it cost you from Amazon?  I've just ordered one from the French C&CC (about 10 euros + 3.5 euros postage ..... are you going to gloat at me?

There's a website that has a downloadable POI file for most satnavs of French (and other) campsites - it's called Archies (or something - just do a search for 'Archies' and POI).

No good for planning a stay but I plan to use it near the end of a day of driving ('cos I'm not sure how far I'm going to get)...

The Archies POI's (points of interest) file is great for satnavs, if you don't have a satnav its worth buying one just for that!!! navigate straight to the entrance...fantastic..I've updated it for this year and shall be using it tomorrow!!!
