If you can push on for about another hour and 20 mins, there is a lovely site at Olivet in Orleans. So nice you could eat your dinner in the wash block if you really wanted to, although much better to use the tables outside the pizza takeaway.

Turn right at Chartres along the D923 to Courville sur Eure. There's a smashing little municipal   here . Very cheap, very quiet, friendly (much MUCH friendlier than the miserable git at Chartres) warden. There's a river with kingfishers and watervoles to stroll along, and you can walk up to the town centre in about 5 minutes to buy croissants etc.
We've stayed there quite a few times but last year we decided to try the one at Chartres and really regretted it.

Probably Carlisle area

Next Summer - France again I hope!

So many campsites, so little time!

We're going to use Olivet this year & pop into the Flunch in the nearby Auchan to have our evening meal & top up our diesel.

Here is another suggestion Camping Les Ilots de St Val not far from Maintenon. Its in the ACSI Book.

We stayed at http://www.campingdemarsalin.fr/ near Dreux. Basic but ok for a stopover. See my review. Not far from main road and sensible roads to it towing a caravan.

We stayed there overnight on our return leg last year. It was the freakiest site we've ever stayed at. Lots of run down - yet pimped - statics with weird residents.
After 6yrs of camping in France this was the only place my kids - then 14 & 10 - were afraid to go to the loos on their own.

From the pictures it looks pretty typical of what many French mobile home owners do with their mobile homes!  Chateau du Gandspette (many, many years ago) used to be a bit the same - with each mobile home surrounded by ornaments, hanging things, signs, rabbit hutches, etc., etc.

It's in a very convenient place to stop, though, and I must admit we were going to pull in to have a look at it when we last passed by that way in June.

Thanks for those suggestions will jot them all down, I think olivet will just be too far after setting off from home at 3am then 10.15 ferry gets us into france at 12.45 I think 5 hours drive will be enough especially as my hubby will be at work until 7pm the previous night, J x

We stayed at the site at Chartres for 2 nights a few weeks ago, it's just about ok and we didn't find the warden to be miserable, perhaps he's a new man.

Mrs B - we were there on the 22nd May - and he was definitely unfriendly!   I imagine, though, that as an employee of the Mairie he won't work every day - perhaps you had his more pleasant replacement, given that many of the reviews mention his surly attitude.

I also found the toilets less than acceptable.  We use the site facilities, generally, and I hate toilets which smell, and those did!  They didn't look as if they had be cleaned for several days if not longer, and the door frames, and paintwork were rotting away in places or parting company with the walls.  It used to be a nice site - but it looks like not much has been done between our last visit and now, whereas most other sites have had some sort of an update, and some are now state of the art.

We don't tend to use the site loos very often but we were right next to them (to get OH's precious satellite tv - only possible place), so probably did.

We are now at La Paille Haute at Boiry Notre Dame, nice site but I forgot that ACSI ends at the end of June!

Courville municipal is only about 15 minutes drive from the Chartres bypass. Nice clean loos and very nice showers. Ideal.
