At the risk of being vulgar, just how many generations does it take to turn new money into old money?

I don't think those who make these sort of judgements would ever say that new money becomes old money! Their descendants, however, may have a different opinion.

I suppose it depends on the descendants. If they aren't careful the old money turns into no money and they go looking for someone with new money.

Old money is inherited. At some point way back it will have been earned.

New money to me is wealth acquired within their own generation.

Taste is aesthetic standards and nothing to do with the amount of money.

An age old debate but no matter how much we debate it there will always be these parameters by which we live and enjoy or loathe.

We always liked to think that it was donated by the grateful lower classes

I don't see how living off an inheritance is better than working for the money...and, yes, my family is relatively old money but we were expected to go out and live off our own efforts.

How recent is this checking and tagging of customer bags? We have been all over France for years and always used large supermarkets. Never had our bags checked at all. This year we have been unable to get to France. Is it just this year? Is it shop lifting or terrorism they are guarding against?

Latecamper

Im with latecamper, myself and the handbrake have never been asked to look in her bag or my hippie bag, also never seen people with there bags clamped. We have been 7 times to France( 9 weeks at a time) and a lot of supermarkets( how good are they, its like a day trip for us)
