We lived in Brussels for 3 years a long time ago...

That's useful then.

Brussels I can't speak to. Bruges is pretty. We lunched in the main square there this year on the way back.

We used to do long week-ends in Paris a long time ago.

Last time we went (5 yrs ago) it was horrendous. Demos all over, robocops stomping around, the domestic staff in the hotel were on a dirty protest when we checked in up to our ankles on room bin mess, front of house staff just looked on, our favourite restaurant overlooking Notre Dame was closed, public urination in the streets.

No desire to return. I wouldn't presume to pontificate on what it's like now but nothing I see in the news makes me think it's got any better.

When even the Guardian paints a bleak picture you have to to worry for La Ville Lumière.

I used to love going to Paris but I have found the accommodation lacking recently. I prefer Barcelona now.
I have only bypassed Brussels recently but I have always liked Antwerp and Brugge though when I was a kid, the canals didn't half stink.

Barcelona was on our list for the next city break. We're interested in the Gaudí sites. But there was aggravation against tourism earlier this year and now there's the independence thing.

Prague though is superb. Highly recommended. Great architecture, restaurants and hotels for all tastes and budgets, and unlike some areas of Paris, a feeling of safety.

I think if you don't live somewhere you can always find reasons why it isn't up to standard, as you have to rely on media reports that are inevitably skewed to suit agendas or to a particular point in time.

Will echo what was said above about Prague, impressive place, good food and very cheap. Was in Paris 3 years ago and there really wasn't anything bad to distinguish it from anywhere else. Went to Milan last year which is usually called dirty but it depends where you go, a lot of parks and museums are very clean and good for a visit. Bruges is nice, Brussels can be too in the right areas and Ghent is as well but the rain hammered down from the minute we arrived until we left.

The moral - everywhere has good and bad points !

Were in Milan last summer. No problems.

My point was that in the 25 years we've been visiting Paris, it had got noticeably scruffier and in parts felt less safe. I sourced the Guardian knowing full well what I'd have got if I'd quoted something like the Daily Heil.

But London's the same.

DD has just moved to Barnes. One way you've got the village green inc a duck pond, the other you've a quick walk to Hammersmith Bridge and from there to bedlam.

The westerlies might blow the bejaysus out of us oop north, but it has its upsides too.

We were in Paris for a few days early June and it was lovely. Got a table at our favourite restaurant (La Rotonde) without booking and as usual it was superb.

We had a longish metro trip out and back to Roland Garros and felt perfectly secure as we did at the tennis itself (4 separate security checks and a complicated ticket system) and everywhere else we went.

TBH I feel much less at ease in London

Ken

A lot of the anti tourist thing in Barcelona was down at the beach. Some people weren't the most decorous and, to be fair, other beach areas in Spain are getting annoyed at some of the shenanigans.
Paris safety never even crossed my mind.I just feel it has gone downhill the past few Years or maybe my expectations have risen. I was in Prague not long after the wall came down and loved it. Riga is lovely, so is Tallin and Vilnius.
