hi ive got a swift challenger 89 van and when its plugged into mains the battery gauge is up and the charger seems to be on and is buzzing (as battery chargers do) but there doesnt seem to be any charge in the battery. i got a replacment battery from a friend who says its only six months old but im beginning to doubt this. Is there anything else im missing other than going to get another battery and try that, Many thanks

Why not uncouple battery and use a multimeter on the battery cables, see if there is power getting to the battery when charger is on. You can also test the battery.

The battery could be 6 months old but has it been kept charged ? If batteries go flat for too long they can become un-useable and wont hold a new charge.
I have read lots of posts on here about c-tek ? chargers being able to bring dead betteries back to life.
Have you tried putting multi meter on the battery to see how many amps it is holding ?

I have a 12v switch that has to be switched on before I get battery power. Check to see if you have one and its switched on.

ok well ive tested the battery and its ok so ive put it on a full charge as ive heard that the caravan charge system may not be able to lift a battery from flat. there is power coming from the charge system so hopefully after its charged all is ok.. so its back to doing the walls again!! Ill get going this season yet

It doesn't explain why you aren't getting any power when you couple up to car.

This is very true. When we got the caravan home the white plug for the car had signs of being dragged on the road (not by us) so when we tried to put it in the car there was a spark. I have since then replaced the socket but nothing iam thinking that the spark has prob zapped the fuse in the car but not sure as to where this is. Ill take it back to the auto electrician who fitted the system and get them to look at it. I run my own garage and im quite friendly with them so they will have a look.

Check any fuses in the 12v wiring in the van as well.

Keep going Tam, once its all sorted you'll be on top of the world.
I had similar probs with my van, thought I was ripped off when I got it and found loads not working but slowly i've gotten most things done and now have a van that suits me down to the ground.
on my challenger, the 12V switch is below the meter, centre is off, towards the pic of a car, power from 12S, pic of van from leisure battery.
I had a similar problem with my batter power.
Turns out there is a fuse holder in line with the battery in the battery box, this had corroded to a point where the fuse would not make contact, so with the charger on, the charger was supplying the 12V but none of it getting to (or from) the battery.
