Fantastic setting for a camp site on a hill side overlooking Hope Cove, the site has lots of great grassy and secluded pitches most of which were flat. The owners were very friendly and welcoming.
The only downside was the toilet and shower blocks could have been better maintained and the additional cost of showers 4mins for 20p was a constant grumble for all who were in residence.
I would certainly return

Just returned from a fantastic week at Karrageen.  Phil the owner greets you on arrival and shows you to your pitch.  The pitches are very spacious and have good views of either the sea, countryside or both.  The site was full whilst we were there but it certainly didn't feel crowded.  Karrageen has plenty of open spaces and hedges which separate terraces.  There was no problem with noise in the evening / night even though the site was full.
The facilities are good.  Showers, hairdryers and dish washing sinks use 20p coins, so remember to take some before you go!   There is also a family/disabled bathroom, laundry , payphone and a freezer for ice packs (no charge).  The site has a small shop which is reasonably priced and also sells alcohol, including real ale and wines.
There are some lovely walks and beaches nearby should you wish to leave the car behind.  We will certainly return to this site.

A lovely site with a very warm welcome and personal escort to our pitch by the owners. Great pitches all with a view, pitches can be secluded if you want them to be or closer to the toilets and bins etc. The toilets and showers were immaculate, I was impressed by the family bathroom and the fact that there were cleaning sponges by every sink to try and encourage people to tidy up after themselves, and there is also a laundry room if needed and freezers packed full of ice packs for use. The shop at the house is very well stocked and licensed to sell alcohol! The pitches are huge so you never need to be to close to another unit.

Hope Cove is a chocolate box village with a little shop a pub and 2 lovely safe sandy beaches. Ideal base for Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Bigbury-on-Sea etc. The lane to the site is small but very managable in our motorhome and has plenty of passing places for competant drivers. All in all a lovely peaceful haven appreciated by those who do not want a pool, clubhouse and lots of noise. By the way the TV reception is brilliant!

A wonderful site, the owners are really friendly, Phil and his wife Nikki, and their 3 children do a fantastic job.
First the site is one of the best we have been to, the views are stunning and only a short walk to Hope Cove (up hill most of the way back!) The family run a small but well stocked shop, you can order bread and daily papers, Nikki also does great takeaway meals (not just Fish & Chips!!) good value too!
The toilet blocks are OK once you have figured out how to work the showers but if you read the instructions you can't go wrong! I have read comments from others re: the toilet block and all I can say is to them, I have seen Phil and
his family cleaning the toilets at midnight, unfortunately their efforts are somewhat in vein (if people put loo paper down the toilets and flushed them instead of dropping it on the floor, also putting hand towels in the bin things would seem a bit better in the toilet blocks, also it would be better if young children were supervised!!)
All in all I think its a great site and one of these days I am going to make it to the top terrace, anyone whose visted before will know what I mean, well I think that's enough I could write all day.

We had an excellent 4 days here. The site is well laid out and provides lots of flat, terraced pitches, most with hook up. If you do not have a hook up cable or light, these can be rented from the shop for £1.50 per night, plus the £1.50 hook up charge. Views can be had of the bay from most of the pitches, caravans are kept away from the tents and you can pick a nice secluded spot in amongst the trees and shrubs if you crave privacy.

Access to the site is down a very narrow winding lane, and due to the complete idiocy of most drivers, can be a bit hairy. This applies to all of Devon though, so drive slowly and prepare for the oncoming Colin McCrae wannabes!

I was slightly disappointed by the cleanliness of the showers etc. We had our 14mnth old with us and the family room had balls of hair and leaves in for the 4 days we were there, so cleaning did not seem top priority here. There is a bay bath provided though, which was great. It is a total pain to have to feed the coin meters with 20p pieces for showers, baby baths and even dishwashing though. If the shower/toilet block had been spotless then I would not have minded so much, however it was not, and we were there in low season.

Overall though, a recommended site, Phil and his wife were attentive and welcoming, and full of advice and tips for camping, days out and history of the area.

August 2002
Spent 6 nights here.

Gaining access to the site was an absolute nightmare. There's about 2-3 miles of single track road on the only route in which gets quite tricky in places. On the day we arrived we were stuck for 30 mins in a jam. I ended up acting as a traffic policeman to negotiate with a dozen drivers or so including a huge tractor. Too stressful. Every journey in and out was a nightmare at some point and this was just for a car (no caravan - we were campers). It gets that narrow and passing places are sometimes inadequate.

Interesting pitches on terraces which offers pleasant seclusion. Some good views. Level and grassy.

Toilets and showers not really that clean but it was busy, I suppose. They were way too far away for a trip in the middle of the night too.

Showers run on 20p meters apparently to conserve water but considering the amount of coins the owners take off the guests they weren't very forthcoming in giving you change when you needed it. A reasonable shower costs between 40 and 60p. If the Bank of England was wondering where all the 20p's are then Phil's your man. May be that was what the tractor was for? Stock piling 20ps was too much of a chore and a morning ritual we could do without.

Laundry room and washing up area was very good.

Absolutely impossible to freeze ice packs. Made several attempts in the middle of the night to chill them down but everytime we put the freezer on 'boost' someone would just come in and switch it back to low again, presumably to save on the electric?

There is a long winding road down to Hope Cove which is much more pleasant than the walk back - especially when there's a flash flood and the sewers break and it comes speeding down the hill towards you. (Not the campsite's fault).

Owner was friendly but did come across as a bit of a know-all when in company e.g. was quick to point out we were walking on the wrong side of the road. (A single track road by the way??? Haven't figured that one out yet. Perhaps he was just being Ironic?)

I can therefore only really recommend this site to helicopter pilots with large bladders, lots of 20 pences and a taste for warm beer. Sorry.
