We stayed at this site for 3 nights and found it an ideal base for York and the surrounding areas. We visited the Yorkshire Wildlife park and Rail museum and both were easily accessible.

The site was great with good facilities which were well maintained and regularly cleaned. The facilities and play area are a short walk from the tent field but on the positive this meant you were away from the noise of the play area.

There were 3 showers in the ladies and 2 in the mens, each costing 20p for 5 minutes. We never had to queue for these but I would imagine they might get busy in the early morning.

The tent field was large with good sized pitches and plenty room for children to play in.

The local village has a good pub, Crosskeys, which was recommended by the owner and served home cooked food with 2 courses for 2 people for only 12.50.

When we arrived we had the tent field to ourselves but this became busier over the bank holiday with a few of the tents a little noisy at night.

Previous reviews mentioned road and animal noises but to be honest these weren't really an issue and didn't impact on our sleep, even when a hedgehog came for a night time visit just outside the tent!

All in all I would recommend this site, especially for families.

Just returned from a weekend on this site with 2 kids and 4 adults all told and I have to say we had a great weekend,

Site clean and friendly, nice play area for kids, clean toilet and shower facilities, easy to find and I would well recommend trying this site.

We visited the windmill pub which was rather expensive for beer and if we had turned right at end of lane and gone into D
Dunnington the cross keys pub was supposed to be a lot cheaper but we know this now for our next visit.

The people who run Ashfield were very friendly and showed us everything we needed to know, and everyone who was on the site at the same time as us was chatty and friendly too.

My husband and I have just returned from a very enjoyable 4-day stay at this campsite. The tent field is quite small but has large pitches and there is plenty of space for ballgames.

The toilet/shower block is a short walk from the site but the facilities are clean and well-maintained and, even though we were there on the bank holiday weekend and the site was full, we never had to queue for the toilet or shower!

The dishwashing room contains 3 sinks,is undercover and is situated opposite the playground, which is quite handy for parents to keep an eye on the kids.

There is a nice pub,The Windmill, about 10 min walk, which serves good food but for an exceptional meal The Cross Keys in Dunnington village is the place to go.The village is stunning. There are lots of places to visit in the area- York, Ripon, Eden Camp.

We will definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Just returned from our stay at Ashfield and I was very impressed. The whole site was very clean and well maintained. The facilities were spot on.

Waking up in a morning to the sound of a nearby Cockerel was pleasant and unique to me.

The site managers are a great couple and the Owners came over for a chat too, which was a nice touch. The location was perfect for what we needed, mountain biking in Dalby and partying in York.

I liked it soo much I have booked again and taking 1st time campers in August, the pitches are also huge so I shall be breaking out the big tent. I will be able to review the child friendliness then too

Referring to the comments by Debbie36, below:-

We had an unexplained problem in the ladies facilities in early June. This was resolved with a large dose of Domestos or three! No other post complains of the same problem, so we hope you can see that this is not the norm.

As you comment we use quality Triple Velvet toilet paper, and would like to think you understand we don't try to save pennies on having no air fresheners - we do have them, they were just overpowered.

We will address comments about a mop, and money for showers, and aim to expand facilities in our closed season.

Lights in the tent field are an issue with planning, which we have little control over.

We have asked our neighbour to lock his cockerel in a dark hut until a more reasonable time.

We're sorry that you had a less than perfect stay and hope this does not affect you visiting again.

If any visitor makes us aware of problems at the time of their visit we aim to resolve them as soon as possible.

Just returned from our first camping trip ever at this excellent site. We picked it from the reviews and it lived up to our expectations completely. We were greeted by a very jolly chap who showed us around the facilities (exactly as described) and to our pitch.

We were in the tent field and both this and the neighbouring caravan field were comfortably busy due to it being half term. It is a perfect site for a family with two young children (6 and 3) as there is a play area (conveniently situated by the washing up room) and the centre of both the camping and caravan field was left free for games. Our children had the time of their lives playing with the other children and didn't want to come home.

We would have asked if we could stay another night if Daddy hadn't managed to break his foot 2 days before our visit and was finding it a bit hard-going in a cast!

Loads to do in the area (Yorkshire Air Museum super)and all you need in the village 2 mins drive away (club, general store, pub, butchers etc). Excellent meal in the Windmill Inn on the main road too. Highly recommended and will definitely return.
