Having just returned from Nantcol I wish to say what a wonderful site it is. The owners ( Aled and his family ) are very welcoming and friendly.
Having just read a previous comment I wish to address a few of the 'moans' as we were among the party that camped at the same time.
Firstly the toilets and showers are clean and yes you sometimes have to join a short queue however this has to be accepted on any camp site at busy holiday periods. Secondly, dogs did not roam around. They were not always tethered but all were harmless and are extremely child friendly. Several children frequently came to play with our dog in the stream and three days in he seemed to have his own fan club with them all knowing his name - he still hasn't recovered!
Finally loud music was not a constant problem. On one day our group was joined by four younger members who did play some music - but not over loud. The Warden did ask them to turn it down and they did. Unfortunately being young however they did tweak it up a little later in the evening and were dealt with by our own group - they left next day.
I would not like people to be put off by some comments made as all the people we met were well behaved and good mannered and the site was peaceful and tranquil. Part of camping is to interact with people and maybe for some people their ideal would be to camp in a field all alone, however this is not what camp sites offer.
We all loved it and will be back many times.

I completely DISAGREE with former scout! Nantcol falls couldn't have been any more perfect!, we stayed for a week from the 28th may to the 4th june, It was fantastic, toilets and showers were cleaned every morning and night.
The owners were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. There are rules about the dogs and not one dog caused any trouble while we stayed there, they all kept to area around the owners tents and owners kept watch of them at all times, the dogs were also very friendly.
I actually stayed in the same field as Former scout at the same time, and I honestly haven't got a bad word to say about this campsite. I give this campsite 10 out of 10 and I have already started recommending it to family and friends.

What a fantastic site! Absolutely gorgeous part of Wales. The site itself was clean and well kept, despite it being full to capacity on our week (half term!). The river running through the site is a magnet for the kids, with picnic tables, nature walks, and a rope swing over the river. The walk from the site up to Nantcol Waterfalls is beautiful and should not be missed.
There are only 3 shower units (plus 1 disabled unit) for the whole campsite, but despite the site being full we didn't have to queue for long, and if you time your shower right, you don't have to queue at all. As the site isn't on mains water, this is the maximum number of showers permissible - more showers means less water coming out of each shower. The shower and toilet block is very clean and well maintained. Cards have to be purchased for showers; this prevents day trippers to the falls using them, and also prevents people staying in the showers for too long! 50p per card gives you a 5 minute shower. Nice and hot too! We could have done with a washing machine on site, but the lack of mains water seems to prevent this. Launderette in Barmouth, not too far away. The host Aled comes round every evening with logs for camp fires and shower cards. Will certainly be going back soon!

Perfect! This site is perfect for families with kids of all ages. I stayed here with my wife and three kids, 10yrs, 06yrs, and 02yrs. We stayed over the bank holiday weekend through to the following Friday and did not want to come home.
The road to the site is narrow, but its a country road and country roads aren't wide.It adds to the excitement of getting there!
Once at the site we were shown to our hook up pitch by the owners son who was very polite and friendly. All the hook up pitches were spaced a good distance apart and I didn't feel cramped in at all.
The site was very busy as expected but there was plenty of room for everyone to enjoy their own space. There is no man made children's play area but what you have here is natures own play ground. My kids enjoyed every minute of this site, climbing trees, playing in the stream, jumping off the rocks into the deep pools, nature walks and just enjoying being kids again.
Camp fires are a must a night. Aledd, the owner, sells logs from the back of his pick up at night for you to burn.
I have read other reviews from this weekend and I have seen criticism of the toilet blocks and shower rooms. The toilets and showers were cleaned daily and a good standard of cleanliness was kept throughout my week's stay. If I were to grumble about one thing its that there are no separate basins away from the urinals for you to wash or brush your teeth in. I found it uncomfortable cleaning my teeth whilst at the same time some one else was using the urinals. We found out late that you could use the disabled toilet, which was much larger, to shower young children.
Overall, great site and we will definitely going back!

Nantcol Waterfalls has the potential of being a 10 out of 10 family campsite. No, strike that; Nantcol Waterfalls has the potential of being an 11 out of 10 family campsite.
Getting there on a busy bank holiday weekend can be an experience as the narrow roads around the nearby towns and villages, especially around Llanbedr, can make the M25 appear free-flowing! Even the driveway to the campsite can be a very frustrating affair as it is about 200 metres long, single track with a bend in the middle and trees blocking the view to the end; you can drive nearly 100 metres only to find that you have to reverse all that way and, believe you me, on the afore-mentioned bank holiday weekend this can easily happen two or three times.
The welcome is genuinely warm and there is an easy-going feel to the place; in some respects, as I go on to elaborate, perhaps a little too easy-going. There are three areas in which to camp: a fairly large field to the east for EHU, another large field to the south for non-EHU camper vans and tents, including a number of quickly-grabbed plots overlooking the stream, and a smaller field to the west for tents only.
The first two offer the best views but were too large for my taste; over the busiest times they can look a little like tent-city. However, this could easily be rectified by a little careful landscaping as I’ve seen on some other sites. There was no marking of pitches in the second two fields which does allow you to spread out a little. By the way, bring a good supply of rock pegs.
Several previous reviewers have mentioned how wonderful the toilet block is; however, I must disagree. They are good, at best, but totally inadequate for the size of campsite. As well as facilities for the disabled there are two covered washing up sinks, three unisex shower cubicles (one not really an option as the light wasn’t working) and, in the gents, three urinals, two WCs and just two sinks. So if both sinks were being used by, say, men having a shave you even had to wait to wash your hands after using the toilet; and there was often a queue for the showers.
The showers cost 50p and operate by a card that you purchase from the shop. They have a fixed temperature and varied from slightly too hot to merely warm. But worse was that the area to get changed in does not drain very well and, even with the provision of duckboards, getting dressed without getting clothes wet was a bit of a palaver. But the main thing is that three showers, a few hand basins and two washing up sinks for the entire campsite is totally inadequate; I’ve been on campsites that were half the size, even a third of the size, that had two or three times the facilities.
As I mentioned, things can be a little too easy-going. If there was a rule about keeping dogs tied to a leash (and I didn’t see one) then it certainly wasn’t adhered to; there were several dogs freely roaming around the field. Also there was a sign that had a very few rules including “No loud music”, but loud music was being played quite frequently and, at times, well into the evening. After complaining a few times I gave up – I was too embarrassed. Such rules need to be spelt out very clearly on arrival and the warden should have a walk around the campsite a couple of times each day just to make sure that everything is at it should be.
Finally, be aware that the campsite, the stream and walks are open to the public. At the busiest times the car park was so full because of day-trippers (4-5 dozen cars) that a dozen or so cars were parked on the main non-EHU field!
I’m aware that I’ve done a lot of moaning. So let me cover the good parts – and the good are very good indeed. There is enough room on the fields for the kids to play without getting under the feet of other campers – always important. The stream that flows through the site is a child-magnet and they loved playing there. Part of the stream is partially dammed with rocks creating a pond deep enough for a dinghy but shallow enough (about 18 inches max.) to be safe. Parents need have no fear about letting their children play here.
But best of all are the walks available. For relatively little effort the rewards are immense and it would be a sin to camp here and not take in the Main Falls, the Top Falls and the Woodland Walk. As we sat by the Top Falls being nourished by the beautiful scenery and our children messed about in the water, I found myself no longer being overly concerned about the faults of the campsite, and its rating slowly increased in my head: 6/10.7/10.8/10.
Finally, the campfires. £4 bought you enough wood for a decently-sized campfire that lasted until bed time. From early evening there were plumes of smoke rising into the sky and the whole site was filled with the gentle perfume of wood smoke. There is something very primal and attractive about gathering around a campfire in the evening. I would, however, suggest that the warden either restricts where campers can build a campfire or provides braziers (no sniggering on the back row); you often found that just where you wanted to pitch your tent there was the debris of a recent fire including, where we were, mussel shells (impressive!), bottle tops and other half-burnt rubbish.
Any further points? There are facilities to recycle, which is good. As for shopping, there is a small village shop in Llanbedr, just under two miles from the campsite, but much better is the SPAR about four miles along the road to Barmouth which has a butchers shop attached.
It’s easy to see why Nantcol Waterfalls is so popular and, in many ways, it is an ideal family campsite. Our own children want to return sooner rather than later but even they picked up on the same faults that I have. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would we go again? Yes. But to fulfil the potential that nature has provided and to put this among my very favourite campsites there are several tweaks required. As it is:- 8/10.

We've stayed in this site for 3 nights and 4 days. We were with friends with children. Very lovely site with wonderful scenery, ie. river, waterfalls, mountains and farms. Our children loved the place so much that they asked to stay for few more nights.
There are loads of activities for both children and parents. There is children's trekking path that they enjoyed so much. The river is safe for children, we have a 2 year old son who loved to play in the river stream all day even though it's cold. The whole family went trekking every morning, a good exercise for everyone.
The pitch is flat and massive, campfires permitted, the owner goes around in the afternoon to sell firewood and to make sure everything is ok. Toilet facilities is superb. Modern spotless toilet as it is cleaned I think more than twice a day and just a few steps from the field. There is a washing up area, modern shower facilities and a chemical disposal unit.
The owners are very friendly, including their children. We would definitely go back to this site. I highly recommend this to families with young children.
