We have just got home after having a lovely weekend at Ravenglass. It is a first class site, beautifully kept and well laid out.
The Shower and toilet block are second to none - spotlessly clean, up to date showers (with no timers or buttons to press every ten seconds) - very good water pressure and loads of hot water. Very good free hairdryer (in the ladies). Also the shower block was warm and roomy with plenty of hooks and a good dressing area and bench in each shower.
The reception to the site is also a very well stocked shop, selling most things which one might need. There is also an information room with leaflets on the surrounding area and its attractions plus games for children. Very impressive.
The pitches are well planned out, level and plenty of space on all four sides - giving each unit plenty of privacy. The site is treed and the whole effect is very relaxing and a treat for people who like wildlife and birds.
The hook ups and services are well placed and there is a good motorhome service point and chemical disposal facility.
The site lighting is well spaced and at night the subdued lights are very good.
The local area is a lot nicer than we thought - plenty of places to visit and a wide variety of places to walk - to suit all abilities. In Ravenglass (a short walk away) there are good eating places at reasonable prices. The town/village is very old and has plenty of history - a walk along the shoreline is a must. The narrow guage railway in the town is well worth going on and the station cafe was very popular with the passengers.
Last but not least - the Manager of the site and his staff are pleasant, efficient and so helpful, both on the telephone and on site. Really nice people.
We shall certainly go back again and again.

We have just returned home after a fantastic week at this site. Never been before but will be returning. There is so much to do here that we couldn't fit everything in to one week. People have complained about there being only two showers per gender but we were there when the site was completely full and never had any problem. I only had to wait two minutes on one morning. They are clean and the power shower is brilliant. The couple who looked after us upon arrival, Andy and Di were very nice and very helpful. The hard standing is a bit hard on the feet so take some good flip flops otherwise no probs there. The shop sells metal pegs if needed. The pitches are a nice size and easy to access. The telly pic is none too brilliant but a coax cable is rentable from the shop for one pound a day with a tenner deposit refundable which gives the various free view channels.
Other amenities on site IE washing etc are all very clean and even washing up is on the inside with about three sinks. The site is set within tree coverage and a field to the rear which gives a lovely view to that side of the site. A few minutes walk up a little lane brings you to a Roman bath house with details of a garrison being in the area. Further on up the lane approx two or three miles signposted Muncaster will bring you to the castle. We had a full day there and the castle itself has little hand held units to enable you to hear the history of this wonderful place brought alive by the present Pennington family members. The owl sanctuary is great and live shows at the back of the castle with some of its members are not to be missed. Excellent photo opportunity's.
The little train ride via lil ratty takes you up to Dalesgarth and from there you can wander around to your hearts content. We made the pilgrimage up to the waterfall (Ghyll) leave the station and turn right onto the little lane walk about 600 yards and turn left (signposted)and go up past the car park. All in all about 1.5mile away through lovely woodland. Be warned its a bit of a climb up there and near the top it is a little slippery and care is needed. Wast water is worth a visit for the beautiful scenery and don't forget to take a picnic with you. It can only be reached from the West side so take the A595 and go towards Whitehaven for about five miles and turn right at Gosforth, this will take you up there.
Just off site the Rattyarms pub was not what we thought it was going to be and we were rather disappointed with the layout inside. To be fair we didn't taste the food and we have heard others say they enjoyed it. We preferred the little cafe on the other side of the station which did excellent traditional cooking and the breakfasts and steak pies were all lovely.
Also if you drive to Gosforth and go past the village you will see the Red Admiral. This pub is clean and does excellent food especially the steaks. Try it believe me. We saw a couple of pubs within Gosforth which advertises food but we never got the opportunity to try them. Be warned if you drive towards Barrow you will drive forever before seeing anything worth stopping for as far as food goes. Nearest Morrisons is in White Haven which is approx 15 miles away so be warned to stock up or otherwise visit the town which is very charming with plenty of shops and other attractions. Ie the rum trail.(didn't get to it this time) or even the sellafield visitors centre. Which are all lined up for when we return. We had a brilliant time and found it very relaxing on this site and we recommend you try it.

This was the first time camping for me and as we were not arriving till 7.00pm Saturday night, my main worry was being able to get the tent up in good time. Helpful staff showed us to our pitch at the top end of the site. Peaceful setting and ideal for our ride up to wastwater. Any worries about the showers and toilets were dispelled as these were in tip top condition. Due to working every Saturday the fact you can book a pitch here means you are not chancing find a site that is full(after 2hrours driving up). Certainly will use the site again as it's not too far from some great rides and walks. We cooked our own meals but it was nice to know that the pub wasn't that far from the site.

Situated just off the A595 the site is well signposted and easily found. On arrival your greeted with an aurora of tranquillity, it almost overflows with it, and you just know your in for a enjoyable stay. Site office doubles as a shop and with a limited stock of those things you forgot to bring. The site is small, but well managed to a very high standard. The majority of pitches appear to be level and hard-standing. The showers and toilets were both spotlessly clean and well heated. However there are only two showers in both male and female causes queueing. Not a major problems, but at the height of the season when it's hot and sticky, lack of facilities may be a problem. My wife reports that there are no private cubicles for women who just want a quick top half body wash. Going back to the showers, they are the best we have come across. Extremely powerful & invigorating ( 5 star ). The surrounding area in peacefully quiet despite being within walking distance of the Ravenglass & Eskdale railway which was our reason for our weekend visit. The village itself sadly and I'm not trying to be harsh, looks lifeless, although there are a couple of pubs. Also within easy reach are Muncaster Castle and the Roman Bathhouse (site showers are much better). To be fair, Ravenglass is off the beaten track, but that would makes it appealing to people who want to explore the Cumbrian coast without venturing into the heart of the oversubscribed Lake District. All in all, excellent site, but suggest more showers are needed.

This site was our FIRST location in our New (to us) caravan and it couldn't have been better. Set in a wooded gently sloping area, the motorhomes caravans or tents sit in amongst the trees on hardstanding pitches mainly. All seemed to have an electric hook up. If you are a tele adict there is no TV reception there but you can plug into the sites system for a pound a night and tenner deposit on the aerial cable. There was plenty of room between pitches and they were pretty level and it was very peaceful and tranquil. Facilities were very clean but not plentiful. Saying that I only had to wait a few minutes for a shower and it was free. There is also a family shower which my wife and little daughter took advantage of. The site staff were very friendly and helpful as well. Some review here says that novice caravanners beware as the road to it is steep. Well this was MY FIRST time towing a caravan and I had no problems what so ever getting there. Ravenglass itself is OK but there is plenty around there to keep you busy. Sellerfield visitor center if you like nuclear power, or not, St Bees is a nice seaside place to visit as well. The little train from Ravanglass to (can't remember name) is very expensive for what it is. There's nothing at the other end either. Don't bother unless you are really into steam trains or wasting money. The Roman Bath house is worth a look as well. Ask at reception to find it though. But basically it is left out the site and about a 5 minute walk towards Muncaster along a private road. We would go back again as we liked the "atmosphere" on site.

Just returned from the most fantastic site that we have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Site was immaculate as were the facilities. Craig and Sandra who run the site were incredibly helpful and friendly. Anyone who claims on other reviews that there was nothing to do obviously did not take the time to fully explore the area. We have three sons and found that we found so much to do that we are having to return to explore further. Sellafield may be on the horizon but it does have a very impressive visitors centre and is well worth taking the time to visit as the children had a great time there. A car is fairly essential to be able to explore but this is a necessary requirement when visiting any lake district campsite. Well done to the site management, keep up the good work !
