Visited this lovely site in Sept for two weeks. It was clean and the owner met us and showed us several pitches that we could choose from. (He has a wicked sense of humour).

The site was quiet and the owner went around to each pitch daily to ensure everyone was happy and offered advice on local attractions etc.

There is one toilet/shower block which means that some parts of the site are some distance from it. During our stay it was cleaned daily. Mops and clothes were also available for campers to clean up after themselves if needed (not that all did).

The showers are charged for and timed but we found that there was adequate time to use these, and it should be remembered that all the water for the site comes from a spring.

The pitch prices were very reasonable with water and waste on or close to each pitch. The take away food on site was brilliant and home cooked, with a very varied menu (not just the usual burger and chips).

There is a lovely beach a mile down the lane and the area has many interesting places to visit. Bolbury Down at sunset is beautiful. The sea can be seen from some areas of the site. One thing that should be remembered is that Devon lanes are narrow, and this is so for the lane to the site, although there are many passing places cut out. But I would advise that if you are visiting this site 'slow down.'

In all we had a great time and met many friendly like minded campers. We will be visiting again next year.

We were in the top field ,with magnificent views but the one loo and shower block was a long walk and across a road. With only 4 showers in the ladies these came under pressure in mornings and evenings as did the washing up area. Having paid £20 per night for our pitch it did seem a bit much to have to pay 40p for a shower which was warm but not hot. The track to the field got very muddy with rain and made it slippery.
Helpful and pleasant owners and the view IS wonderful!

Have just returned from a week at Karrageen with two kids, found facilities to be good, shower / toilet block clean enough. Family very friendly, helpful if you need advice on local area. The fresh pain au chocolats available each morning were my personal highlight! I wasn't keen on where we were pitched however, our narrow field had high hedges behind and in front obscuring all views making me feel quite claustrophobic. In the high winds of last week the field became an absolute wind tunnel.
Lovely part of Devon though, kids adored North sands beach at Salcombe, sandy beach, easy parking, great cafe, nearby toilets. If it hadn't taken seven hours to get home I'd be tempted to go again but would request different field.

Just returned from a long weekend here and found this to be an excellent site. We were booked into another campsite nearby but weren't too keen once we saw it so decided to try and get a pitch here instead. Phil the owner was more than happy to see us, even though it was the first week of the kids school holidays and the site was almost full.

Given that we arrived on spec we got a good pitch (Phil seemed to personally take everyone to a pitch) - very level and sheltered. The site is well laid out with shrubs and hedges dividing the levels and making it feel cosy and more than 'just a field'. Phil was seen regularly round the site chatting and checking everyone was ok - a nice touch - he even came to say goodbye at the end and wish us a safe journey home.

The toilets were (as previous reviews) on the far side of the camping area but this wasn't too much of a problem - it only took a minute or two to walk there. The showers and toilets were clean and mops /sponges were provided to help keep them that way - it only takes a few seconds to mop the grass/mud out when you've had a shower after all. They cost 40p for 4 minutes or 60p for 6 minutes, and we found the water to be hot whenever we used them.

The on-site shop was well stocked (no papers though - Malborough or Hope Cove for these) including beer and wine, and fresh croissants on Saturday morning. The takeaway meals smelled great and seemed very popular, although we didn't eat any.

We ate at the Hope and Anchor in Hope Cove one night and found it very disappointing - very average pub grub but at massively inflated tourist prices - I paid £9 for a tiny dish of risotto that tasted like boil in the bag rice with chicken stock. Yes the road is narrow but this is rural Devon, not the M5 and if you live in the country and are used to them (and don't drive a massively out-sized 4x4) they will not be a problem!

On the whole we were pleased with the site - would have liked to try the well regarded top field but it wasn't open when we visited in July - maybe next time. Oh - and the stars were fantastic!

Well, we have been going to Karrageen for the last 7 years, before we had children and no when we have a family of our own.
In fact I used to come here when I was lad with my mates.
I agree with most of the reviews about the peace, unspoilt views, quiet lanes, wonderful beaches, great shop and above all friendly owners.
The big news for 2007 is that the showers have been UPGRADED! This is a huge improvement and has certainly improved the whole experience.
So if you were cautious before, book away confident that the showers are now as they should be and revel in the knwledge that you too have discovered one of the best sites in the country.if you don't mind making your own entertainment!

We have just registered but have been camping now for five years, whilst creating our virtual brochure I was alarmed to see such tepid reviews abouts Karageen, We have been here twice, not for the last couple of years as we have been busy exploring new places! but this spot holds special memories for us. It is fabulous in the height of summer, there top field is only open in August and it is not to be missed by the real campers among us!

We prefer to see the site as eco-friendly no lights everywhere polluting the sky, you can star gaze here! yes the showers cost 20p, but only because not everyone respects that the water here is precious, it comes from a spring, when you have washed your hair in this it feels fantastic. The family are helpful and professional, they keep an eye. No noise here, the majority that visit Karrageen come to enjoy the spectacular view and the peace.

The walk down the lane to Hope Cove is not difficult, however a torch is a must for the return journey when the Hope & Anchor has closed (the pub!), yes the hill is severe in places, but it is so quite that you can hear a pin drop, the most activity you will see is the odd low flying bat! During both our visits only a hand full of cars use this lane after dark.

Give it a go for some peaceful, remote camping close to our wonderful south hams coastline! We will be back this year for a long weekend at least
