Bad (but not too bad!): Wash blocks are not up to Camping or Caravan Club standards. The toilets / showers are OK, with plentiful hot water, but could do with some renovation. This should not put you off visiting this site however.

Good: Whilst seemingly very close to the A38 and out of town shopping outlets, the site could be a million miles away, as once you approach the site you are at the start of the Plym river valley which stretches unspoilt to Dartmoor.
From the site you can walk through National Trust woodland, beside the river Plym, along an old tramway and across old viaducts towards the moor. You can also cycle this 7 mile route, following the old Tavistock railway bed, high above the river and pathways.
It was so restful in the bright mid-march sunshine. There are even steep woodland trails for the more demanding cyclist.

The site may be within walking distance of a park and ride to Plymouth, near large supermarkets and other outlets and it may be good stop off for the Roscoff ferry or en route to Cornwall, but it is worth a visit just to explore what is right on its doorstep.

Just returned from two weeks at Riverside. Excellent location for touring / sightseeing with English Riviera and Cornwall all within easy reach. Also very good if you enjoy cycling-we cycled the Plym valley and also into the City centre a few times.
The site itself is ok, although we found the showers pretty basic and not always clean with locks broken on several shower doors and trays for toiletries also broken. In fairness we did have exceptional levels of rain during our stay and the site was maintained well in view of this.
We would consider returning to the site because of the close proximity of local areas of interest and attractions.

There is no doubt that this site benefits from the selection of mature trees and its attractive landscaping. It is very conveniently placed for the city of Plymouth, those taking a stop-over on a long journey to Cornwall, or for the ferry to Roscoff. It was quiet, but may not be when in high season with its restaurant etc.

However I did find plenty of room for improvement. The attitude of the staff upon arrival could hardly be described as welcoming; in fact it was thoroughly grumpy. Our toilet block at the far end of the site had only one fluorescent tube working in what was a rather large building, and remained unheated throughout a chilly end of October stay. A walk to the one nearer reception was needed if one wanted better lighting, and that block was heated too - but only by a fan heater over an ill-fitting door, so it was rather bracing in the early morning. One of the three showers there was out of order, and appeared to have been so for a while.

The grass was neatly trimmed, but the clippings were not picked up. This meant that our caravan got dirty with grass cuttings, along with toilet blocks becoming contaminated too. Things like this are what I call 'attention to detail', and are not taken care of on this site. More worrying was the number of Fire Points around the site which were missing one, or both, of their extinguishers. From the condition of the paint on the backing boards I would judge that this is not exactly a recent problem.

If proximity to the attractions of Plymouth is a priority then I can recommend this site, but if you want that little bit extra that so many sites strive to provide these days you will need to look elsewhere. We will not be staying here again when there is so much competition out there.

Just had torrential RAIN for 8 days straight!  We decided that it wasn't worth packing up to come home as the tent hadn't had a chance to dry out.  Even the boats taking part in the Fastnet Race retired as the weather was so awful.  However, though the campsite got rather soggy I didn't hear of anyone actually getting flooded out.

The owners kept the facilities well cleaned in very trying circumstances (including the efforts of one little girl who decided it would be fun to relocate the gravel path into the men's facilities).  Although I agree with the earlier comment about the height of the showers, after some exploration I found the showers in the other end of the main block to be a bit higher and would run for a bit longer.  But I did feel that at least we were saving water (not that there wasn't sufficient sploshing about outside!).

The food in the restaurant is good as is the takeaway, with a reasonable choice of standard dishes: steak, curry, fish and chips and a special each night: BBQ or Sunday roast etc.

The playground is more suited to younger children and there is a games room with a few machines.  The bingo was good fun, made even better as I managed to win a couple of times!

The pitches are level but not over large with mature trees and shrubs.  The site is well placed to get into Plymouth with the park and ride just up the road and over the bridge.  A few rules and regulations would have been beneficial - we saw little "policing" of pitches and behaviour.  We witnessed one couple testing out the water temperature in the swimming pool by dipping their fully shod feet in - didn't fancy swimming in it after that!

We certainly found enough to do in the area even with the weather being so awful.  The last two days of our holiday were spent in the SUN on the beach at Bigbury on Sea, trying in vain to skim board!  Oh my bruises!

All things considered (and trying to put the rain out of mind) our stay here was good fun, and the site is good value for money.  We'd certainly return to this site, and hopefully we'd get better weather (you couldn't get worse surely) - but what do you expect if you will go camping in August!

Riverside is a beautiful, quiet campsite situated very close yet seemingly miles away from the city of Plymouth.
We have just returned from a 4 night stay in late July / early August. The site was busy but never seemed it. Most of the units were caravans or campers which meant that the facilities there were never busy.
Toilets / showers are well kept and clean. Pitch sizes are very good.
The only downside for us was the fact that high trees surround the site which is great for seclusion but tends to hide the early morning and late evening sun. We would recommend a pitch towards the centre of the site rather than around the perimeter to get the best of the sun.
The swimming pool was nice, not massive, but fairly quiet even at that time of the season.
There was various entertainment laid on but we never attended.
We would definitely stay at Riverside again and would recommend it as a great site for those wanting a quiet hany location near Plymouth.

We visited this site in the height of the season and it coped really well. There are two large shower/toilet blocks and lots of room around the pitches.
The children's playground is limited and more useful for younger children but there is a games room which houses a pool table and TV, plus a couple of older style arcade machines which do not break the bank.
There is a small bu adequate take away and a restaurant which has reasonably priced meals, there are also specials on every night, i.e BBQ night which costs £3.75 per person. The food was extremely well priced and lovely. The owners take great care with all its customers and provide a great fun atmosphere at the small but adequate clubhouse. The drinks at the bar are not highly priced as some sites are and the choice is extensive. The entertainment is limited to the high season and it generally amounted to bingo and the odd entertainer but everyone appeared to enjoy it. This is a great site on the edge of Plymouth city which is serviced by a park and ride 5 minutes walk from the gates of the site and a large superstore 10 minutes walk away.We had no problems with the flooding as the site was well drained.
I would definitely use this site again and its only downfall is that the local beaches are few and far between but this did not prevent us from finding one at cawsands. Highly recommended.
