We went here the first weekend of March, so basically as soon as the campsite opened for the season. We are new to caravanning, and the management were extremely helpful to us by helping us back our caravan into the gravel pitch (ok, I'll admit, they did it for us!).

There were some touring caravans around that were being stored there, but only a few occupants that weekend (one being the friendly warden), so the site was extremely quiet. There was an adjacent field connected to the site, but empty and I didn't check it out. My daughter loved the horses in the neighbouring fields and spent plenty of time looking at them and petting them. Our field was well maintained and we were sheltered by bushes and trees, close to the office.

My children enjoyed the playground at the campsite, which was adequate with a big circle swing (looks like a bowl), a slide and a few swings. I was told there was a much larger playground down the road in the village, but we didn't check it out as we had activities planned.

There was an outdoor covered Aussie style bbq area by the playground. There was a shop at the campsite that I did not visit, but there is also a shop just down the road that sells petrol as well. And just behind it is a garage if say, you get a nail in your tyre and need it repaired! Very friendly people! There is also a fantastic pub (The Windmill). The food is very, very good.

The toilets at the campsite were being painted, so we used the disabled one, which for the very few people there was perfectly adequate. I don't think it was heated, though, so it was pretty cold, but it was well kept with a large shower area.

We were about 10 miles from York city centre, which we visited one day. We were very close to the Air Museum, which we also visited. I didn't notice any road noise, as we were off on a side road and not on the main, however early mornings there were a lot of what sounded like rifles going off. There were woods in the distance, which is where the noises were coming from. You couldn't hear it inside the caravan, however. I find the sound of guns a little unnerving, personally, but it wasn't enough to deter me from staying there again. We stayed for 3 nights here and were happy with the location, facilities and service. We would visit again.

Just returned after a weeks stay at Ashfield.

Nice little place, quiet, secluded, with just the right amount of facilities:

~ showers & toilet block
~ play area
~ barbecue area
~ microwave & washing-up
~ free Wifi
~ shop
~ games room

Beautiful surroundings, and the village of Dunnington is quaint and a two minute drive down the lane. Great for those with kids and/or dogs. Lots of space to run around, some nice dog walks just off the campsite.

Good base for York, East coast, Harrogate etc, as well as North Yorkshire hiking/walking. Lots of other great places to visit within a reasonable distance, as well as some little gems - Pocklington and Stamford Bridge spring to mind. Go for a wander, grab a beer, watch the world go by.

Love shopping? Very close to Monks Cross shopping outlet (approximately 5 miles) and the likes of Morrisons, Sainsburys etc - which is great when you're self-catering. Also a Go Outdoors superstore (all found at Foss Bank). Handy if you need something camping related :)

Facilities are all well cared for, toilet blocks etc cleaned regularly. On-site staff friendly and helpful. Pitch sizes are generous (ours was huge) and the Wifi was pretty impressive.

BBQ's are allowed providing you're sensible and raise them off the ground.

Although I don't have young children, they're clearly very welcome, and every child I did see had a big smile plastered all over their face. In short safe and secure for those with little ones.

Dogs - again, welcomed, though they need to be on a lead. Ours was fine, tent peg and a long guy line did the job.

The A1079 IS a little noisy. You do switch off to it but worth a mention.

Shop - like someone else has already said, it should be open for longer hours. 9 while 10am and 6 while 7pm, which meant that you'd got a very small time frame within which to buy bits and pieces or, like us, swap your freezer blocks. That said. You can re-freeze your blocks, just remember the shop opening times.

And that's it. Highly recommended, great for families and family/friends groups, looking forward to a return visit.

~ take a few 20ps for the showers. 20p buys you five minutes hot water - it's plenty.

~ if the shop's shut (and mostly it is) there's a petrol station a minute from the site (back on the (A1079) that's well stocked with essentials, and the village of Dunnington has a CostCutter shop in the centre, on York St.

~ The Cross Keys pub in Dunnington is worth the walk - just up Common Lane, child friendly, good pub food.

We stayed here for two nights, Saturday and Sunday, with our 2 children aged 9 and 4 after reading the good reviews here.

I have to say I wasn't looking forward to camping again after a break of several years, but this site made my re-introduction a little easier.

The site itself is flat and quite small and very well maintained. It's only a short drive to the nearest York park and ride and only 10 minutes away from Monks Cross shopping centre. Everyone we spoke to at reception was very pleasant and helpful and on arrival we were shown where to pitch and taken for a quick tour of the facilities.

The toilets and showers were very clean and there was a decent sized, clean, enclosed washing up area. There's also a room with a kettle and a microwave which I thought was a very thoughtful idea, especially for those in tents. The room with some sofas and a TV was also a nice touch which we didn't really use as the weather was nice while we were there but it would come in handy when it's not so nice. The children's play area was up to date, safe and enclosed.

We had a drive into the village for some fish and chips (10% discount if you ask for a voucher from the campsite reception) which is 5 minutes up the road and spotted a fantastic adventure play area.

I did have a few niggles with the site, nothing major but worth mentioning. The showers are coin operated and cost 20p for 5 minutes. As the site cost over 20 per night I think charging for showers on top of that is maybe a little excessive.

We were pitched at the far end of the camping field which backs onto the main road. Some people may find the noise annoying.

The opening hours of the shop are very limited.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would come back if we ever want to camp near York again.

Just returned from a 2 night stay - our first camping experience! What a fantastic site -friendly staff, toilets and showers were spotless.

Lovely playroom with TV for kids, ping pong table (would be better if there had been any ping pong balls) although you can buy them at shop for 30p.

Playground was ideal for kids and all in close proximity to camping field - felt comfortable letting 7 yr old twins wander up on their own.

Aussie BBQs were different - we enjoyed one the first night - although 2. 00 for 30 minutes.

Only con was camping field did have traffic noise from A1079 - but after a couple of nights I am sure you would get used to it.

Basic shop = could maybe have been open for longer, but well stocked with essentials.

All in all I feel a bit spoilt (especially with the free Wi fi) and worry that this site has pitched our expectations too high!

We turned up at this site without booking, and the wardens could not have been more welcoming, even happy to lend me an extension lead for the hookups (longer leads recommended). Camping fields surrounded by trees, so a nice enclosed feeling. Fellows campers/caravanners friendly, without being intrusive.

Though there were mainly caravans at this site, tents were clearly welcome. Facilities were excellent, good playground, table tennis and TV (fortunately the children mostly ignored this, but could have been useful in really bad weather), small shop, including alcohol, and penny sweets, which kept my children occupied with visits for hours.

The children (9 and 11) really enjoyed cycling around the tarmac path, and repeatedly said how much they liked the site. There was a small kitchen with a kettle and microwave, and outside barbecues, which looked good, but we didn't used them this visit.

There's a great playground in the village, and York is a short drive away. I'd forgotten how much there was to do in York. Highly recommend this site.

First impressions were very good. Very clean and tidy. We booked in very quickly and wardens friendly/helpful. We were shown around the site.

There is a nice clean washing room with plenty of hot water, showers and toilets were clean and never ran out of loo roll. The showers were 20p on a timer. There is a room with microwave and kettle which is very handy !

There are a couple of swings/kids climbing frames and there is also a games room which has table tennis, books, tv and sofas to lounge about on. There is also a shop selling essentials which was very handy.

Free Wifi which was excellent !

Excellent location, not far from the park and ride and approx only 10 mins from centre of York. Would visit again as no complaints whatsoever, great site, lovely people !
