If you're into touring - a few days here and a few days there - rather than a pre-booked fortnight at a pre-planned site, then here's a classic little municipal site that might appeal.
It's about 40 miles inland from Royan, so near enough for a day at the coast, but the brandy caves at Cognac are nearer than that, and the city of Angouleme is an undiscovered treasure not far away.
But first you've got to negotiate your way into the site as the gate will likely be locked. The warden comes and goes unpredictably but there are instructions in French on the gate - 'Ask at the house across the road, phone the Mayor, ring my mobile'etc.
When you are in you'll see it's one of the very best of the old style Municipals with all the facilities you need - spotlessly clean, well maintained, lots of space, no need to book, and ridiculously cheap - we paid 7 euros for a pitch, though electricity is extra to that.
Right next door is a tip top open air public pool waiting for you when you come back from a day's sightseeing - though that might only be open in the French school holidays.
We liked it and will surely call again.
