Excellent site right on the ocean, but surprisingly sheltered. Small but perfect if you want to get away from it all, very good shower block and everything maintained at a very high standard by Donald, who even leant us his electric cable as ours wasn't quite long enough!

We have caravanned for many years and this has to be one of my top five sites.

I would also recommend the amazing Kismail Cafe in Castlebay - the scallop pakora are a wonderful thing!

This was my first campsite on a 8 day tour of the Outer Hebrides and it was absolutely wonderful. The site itself is on right on the west coast of Barra (the most western site in Britain'. The facilities were wonderful with a kitchen, fridge kettle and ultra clean toilets and showers. Perhaps the defining thing was the proprietor who is also a local postman. He was born on Barra and is a wonderful source of local knowledge. On the second night a storm hit and he was there making sure we were all right and putting up windbreaks to protect the smaller tents. A wonderful welcome and comfortable stay awaits. Thoroughly recommended.

Although very small this site is nothing short of stunning in a totally prime location overlooking the west coast of Barra.

The toilet/shower block totally blew me away, I've seen far less standard in three star hotels. There is an amazingly kitted kitchen with even a filter coffee machine for a small fee, kettle and microwave. Best to point out there is only one shower, but that said seems to work fine as the site is so small. There is also a washing machine here, and many more plans for improvement, it really is hard to imagine the work done to this site which was simply tiny seaside fieid.

The site owner is typical of the Hebridean population which are some of the friendliest I've met to date in Britain, he was more concerned I got set up before I paid him as arrived late.

The newly changed hands Barra Beach Hotel is 5 minutes walk down the road, I was hugely disappointed with this since my last visit in 2011 as it now seems to cater for the 'upper class' clientele only and wasn't very non-resident friendly along with £4 for a poor quality pint. Castlebay can be walked in around 30-40 minutes for a far better option.

Downside to this site. Nothing

A couple of miles from Castlebay next to a lovely rocky bay and only a few minutes walk from a sandy beach. We experienced stunning sunsets and hardly any midges. Donald, the owner, collects payment in the evenings, he is often around for the new arrivals around the time the ferry docks. There is a board at the end of the driveway with the names of the parties that have reserved pitches, these all have a reserved plaque on them.

The site has some hardstanding pitches for Motorhomes with plenty of space for a van and awning. The views out to sea are lovely, with hills to one side and a rocky bay to the other. The amenity block was always clean, no charge for the showers and no push buttons. The site was full one night as it was the Barrathon weekend, but even when full we never had to queue to use the facilities. The airport timetable is in the amenity block, itís well worth a trip up there to see the plane landing or taking off.

It is an easy bike ride or walk into Castlebay along the Islandís main road, this isnít too busy and there are tracks in places on the grass verge. It is possible to walk up Heaval (1257 ft) from the site or from Castlebay, we did it as a circular route, no real tracks but easy enough to pick your way up.

In summary, a lovely, well kept, scenic campsite, ideal for a relaxing break.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the start of our holidays and it was definitely the nicest site we stayed on whilst touring the isles.

The site is a short drive from the Ferry at Castlebay (beware the entrance is just after the site sign - we missed the turning!). The site is right next to the sea and has fantastic views overlooking the bay - we even got to see Dolphins. There is a rocky bay next to the site (safe for the kids to play on)and lovely sandy beaches nearby.

The amenity block is new and well equipped (w/m, t/d, microwave, etc) with lots of information, the toilets and showers are kept very clean and we never had to wait to use them. There was also plenty of room around our pitch and enough room for the kids to play.

The owner is very friendly and helpful, lives nearby and is pops in regularly. We also thought it was very reasonably priced.

We couldn't fault this site and would highly recommend it :-)

Perfect site. Enough has been said about its quality! Carry on!

There were seals in the beach below. Take a walk to the cemetry across the beach and feel the Hebrides. Walk to Craigston and turn right passing school and church. Go some 2 miles along this road; at the end you will find a croft-house. This used to be a museum (as stated on the OS maps) but isn't anymore. Now derelict it gives a feeling of times passed by.

The church might not look spectacular, go inside.
