We visited this site previously as a group of 4 couples some years back and had a good stay, the first time camping in years and I gave it a review. Having used a few more sites over the last 4-5 years or so, it is time for an update.

As a couple alone, we arrived this time to a very friendly welcome by the gate staff who explained the site layout, rules, local attractions, and how to review that information.

We found a pitch in a fairly open area, level and of course requiring rock pegs as is normal for Ashurst. We pitched and sat to relax with a bbq and a few 'refreshments'. There were families nearby with small children, and a family with young lads and teenage girls pitched close by. All were friendly and well behaved in their games. We didn't have kids with us, and I didn't seek or see a playground, but then again, the whole site was full of kids opportunity for using the space - playing ball, hide and seek and climbing trees. This may not please all having balls kicked around your unit and kids on 'your pitch', but didn't bother us at all. I guess it depends on the kids and we got lucky. Noise was minimal at night.

Washroom facilities were diligently kept clean by staff despite some of the campers apparent lack of care. The only thing I would say is that on the Sunday night, half of the male washroom block was closed and remained closed - I assume due to the exodus of campers on Sunday morning which meant that at cleaning times, the remaining men's cubicles were very busy with shy men avoiding the lady cleaner when they just wanted a wee :)

There is no EHU option, no shop on site but a convenience store is a short drive away and Lyndhurst is just a few miles away. There is also a pub serving decent food a hundred metres or so away from the site entrance. I would prefer to be able to buy some fresh supplies first thing in the morning without leaving site, and have the option of EHU so facilities get marked down purely on that basis.

Overall, a good stay for a couple of nights, not the cheapest site £63. 50 for a Saturday and Sunday given no shop, no electric etc, but worth the money for the access to the forest and wildlife on site, including the cool sound of owls hooting and screeching during the night, and of course the frog between the footprint and SIG which hopped out and frightened the life out of my OH as we dropped the tent :)

I visited Ashurst with my DofE group for one night of camping at this site.

On arrival, we were told the rules of the campsite and told which area had been assigned to us. The staff who greeted us were very friendly and seemed to be happy to help.

When some of our group did something against these rules, rather than the staff just telling us not to do it and having a go at us they gave us advice about alternatives and told us their reasons.

The site was clean and well kept. No litter around and all and lots of bins around, which can be useful if it is raining and you donít want to walk far.

When setting up the tents. We found that the ground was very hard and it was not easy to get the pegs in. Those of us who had tents with one layer didnít bother with pegs and just weighed it down by putting our heavy bags inside. Everyone else had to use either lots of force or leave their pegs poking out the ground slightly.

The toilet blocks were clean and well kept. Everything seemed to work perfectly. Anyone staying here should bear in mind that the passcode lock on the door doesnít do anything. You just push the door and it opens.

The only major down side is that the campsite is right next to a train line. This means that there are trains making a noise every half hour all day, every day. This makes it slightly harder to get to sleep.

As our beloved Rosie (Iveco gorg) died at Denny Wood in June, this has been a revisiting of proper camping for us after 6 years of vans. We've been to this lovely site a few times, would v much recommend to all. You can camp amidst ancient oaks and be happily disturbed by roaming ponies and cows, v little light pollution so just wait till proper dark and look up!

Read the negative reviews about the staff, before we landed, bit perturbed but all good in our experience, bit too matey if anything. Our weekend was a little holiday away from busy lives and yes, we just wanted to sit under the gazebo, enjoying the location and chat rubbish for 2 days, didn't need this commenting on every time a warden passed!

Aside from that a beautiful site, v well maintained and well worth a stay for anyone xx

What a lovely camping trip. All staff, at reception, service block and on barrier duty were so friendly.

The site is in an excellent location with walking and cycling paths straight off the site into the forest. Our little boys loved using their bikes and going for a walk and picnic from here as did we.

As our first family camping trip this was a good site. No overbearing facilities/clubhouses etc. Just a simple site with clean toilet facilities and lots of outdoors on offer. A reasonable price on comparison with others. You get what you pay for.

We managed to find a spot to pitch under a tree right next to the boundary to the forest so no immediate neighbours and were lucky enough to enjoy thunder and lightning from the tent. Our toddlers slept very well. I definitely recommend.

We love this campsite! It has the perfect mixture of being part of the forest, but also close to useful amenities. There is a well stocked shop just down the road, two pubs within a short walking distance and the site is 10 minutes drive from Lyndhurst with its pubs, butchers, coffee houses and the all important camping shop for last minute purchases or emergency repairs!

There are bike routes directly out of the back of the campsite straight into the forest and the site itself is fun for children to ride around. The toilets and showers are kept immaculate and the wardens and assistants are so friendly and helpful.

There is no playground as such but for a weekend visit there is plenty of fun to be had for children in just exploring the site, making dens etc.

We've visited Ashurst on and off each year for nearly 20 years, as a young couple and now with our 7 year old twins and we always recommend to others.

The only one thing I would mention is, don't set your pitch on the left hand side of the site as you come in unless you want to be really familiar with the local train times. Train noise on the rest of the site is not a problem.

We stayed at this site over the Bank holiday weekend and expected it to be heaving. We were pleasantly surprised to find that although the site was obviously busy there was plenty of space and you certainly didn't feel on top of each other. It makes a change to be able to select where to pitch and how you wanted to pitch and I really liked not have 'straight line marked out pitches' this makes the site feel informal and relaxed and you definitely get the feeling of camping in a forest!

The facilities were spotless and the water hot even though the site was busy with ample WCs, showers and basins for all.

Ponies wandering around was novel and interesting for the children. A really lovely site and one that we will definitely be returning to.
