Well, I am gobsmacked. We have stayed here many many times over the last few years and, indeed, stayed at this site for 28 days throughout June and I don't recognise it at all from the previous review.
The reception on C&CC sites are, as advertised, only open 9. 00 till 10:00 and 4:00 till 5:00 although they do open up in between times for new arrivals.
This particular site always ask which pitch you would like unless they are practically full. There only four tarmac pitches and these are specifically for campervans. The hook-up is 16 amp and There were no site problems with the electricity supply during June. But then, it is not unknown for folks to trip their own hook-up point by overloading it.
The toilet/shower facilities certainly are excellent and kept spotlessly clean. However, I'm at a loss to understand how someone can have a problem with the push button in the shower as it's at waist height on me and I'm 5'10'. It's also the standard fitting on all C&CC club sites and is located within the flow of the shower.
The staff at Tavistock are very efficient, friendly and helpful.
It's a site we have used many times and will continue to do so.
We were very disappointed with this site. As you approach the camping fields there is a very small sign pointing to Reception, which is easy to miss and then you have to reverse out again. Whilst looking for a warden (no-one manning Reception)a guy who was washing his car and had watched us go to Reception came over and identified himself as one of the Wardens, not a very good start.
The pitch we were allocated was ok, level and tarmacked, but it was a bit like being in a car park, we have found on various sites that if you only want a couple of nights ' anywhere will do'.
We also had problems with the electric tripping out twice.
The toilets and showers are excellent, although the showers are the push button type and for someone with short arms were a bit of a pain, as I couldn't reach the button whilst standing under the shower.
Tavistock is a nice little town, with an indoor market on a Saturday and the walk along by the river from the car park is lovely.
Princetown, with the famous Dartmoor prison is only a few miles away and the museum is well worth a visit at £4 per adult, it is great value.
As previous campers have made clear, a very pleasant place to stay. However, some of the earlier reviews may now be a little out of date so itís perhaps worth making a couple of comments.
No issues with location, facilities or employees, all are excellent. The campsite forms part of a small tourism development consisting of static homes, Bungalows for let and the camping fields for about ninety units.
The lower flat field houses the fully serviced area, then comes the main field with hard standing and grass hook-ups, this has a very slight slope. Then finally the additional field which has more of a slope and fewer electrical points.
The grounds are well kept but I didnít notice any facilities for children, nor does there appear to be a Ďfamily bathroomí, this may now be the disabled wet-room.
The shop is very basic indeed. A well situated site for exploring Dartmoor and surrounds either on foot, bike or car. Looe in Cornwall is for example just forty minutes away by car (and the fresh fish merchants are well worth the visit).
The access road has a couple of narrow points around the bends but didnít present us with a problem. They might have done though had we met some of the quite early arrivals that came in during our stay,
Also good to note the number of overseas visitors using site. Would return again!
Overall a fine site, located on edge of Dartmoor. Limited walking directly from the site as access pathways not great, and the busy 'B' Road running past the site is noisy, with traffic getting a run up for the hill up on to Dartmoor. We chose a pitch as far from the road as possible, but still found this intrusive.
Limited 'essentials' in the site shop/office, no nearby store, but Morrisons and plenty of other shops in Tavistock a few miles away.
Grass pitches (which we like) are sloping mainly, and needed extra chocks to get reasonably level (which the site managers helpfully supplied), and the awning was on such a slope that it collected water in the night (on the pitched roof which was almost therefore level because of the slope), and collapsed with a bang around dawn. Outcome - a rude awakening, one snapped pole, one bent pole, and a wet and somewhat nervous Golden Retriever!
There are also plenty of level(ish) tarmac and gravel hardstanding areas, and fully serviced pitches too. Showers were as you would expect from a CCC site - spotless. Huge 'wetrooms' for showering, with thermostatic control and a pushbutton supply which gave a good 30 seconds per push, so ample, whilst potentially saving water too.
No playground so not aimed at children in that respect, but great areas for them to explore. 2 really good dog walks.
Overall, a good base for Dartmoor and Tavistock, but everything is a drive away, so probably not so good for Campervans, or those (like us) who like to park up and forget the car for a few days.
Stayed for 10 days at this site and found it excellent in every way. Friendly helpful staff. Clean and plentiful toilets and showers. Great location for walking on Dartmoor. You can literally walk from the site up to some great views.
If you are in this area and a member of the national trust there are a wealth of houses and gardens to visit. Only downside was no pub in walking distance.
We did however find a great pub at Peter Tavey which did good food and also did 4litre takeaways of nice real ale. The farm next door sells excellent hanging baskets for £5.00-£8.00. We bought 3 to take home!
Fantastic site. Short drive to Tavistock town centre. Walks onto the moors from site, yes the road is busy at times but for most of the walks you are only on the road for about 25 yards and then you turn down the quiet lanes.
Toilets and showers best we have seen. If you push the button when pushing on the shower rather than just tapping it then it stays on for a lot longer. Showers are more like wetrooms each has it's own toilet and sink as well the shower.
Site was kept absolutely spotless you couldn't get more helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely go back.
