Just had 3 wonderful nights at this site. Only 25 minutes from home, we usually camp in Derbyshire but all sites were full so were pleased to just get pitches somewhere! We travelled with friends with a caravan and as it was a bank holiday the largest field was open so we easily found two pitches together (allowed to choose our own pitches which is always good I think).

We were pleasantly surprised by the site and facilities, although I have to say the toilets on the field we were in were not the best, basically two pretty shabby loos in a lockup! No soap in there which we thought was a bit lacking in this day and age and only a cold water tap. Room for improvement there although the other toilet/shower facilities on the site were great. I guess if we were to go again we would ask to be located closer to the other loos. My only other negative point would be that there are no recycling facilities on the site and all rubbish is just disposed of together. It breaks my heart to throw glass, cans etc in with all the other waste!

Anyway, that's the negatives over with. The site is so relaxing, right at the side of hollingworth lake which is very popular for tourists. Access onto the lakeside walk is via a stile and then 20 yards ahead is the path. Lovely walk round the lake with two pubs along the way. We ate at The Beach pub, very good value for money and enormous beer garden at the back with a great play area for the kids (4 between us). Spoke to another lady who had eaten at the other pub, she said it was lovely too.

Owners very helpful and friendly, small shop which stocked the essentials on site and there is a park which although not part of the site, is accessible from the site over a wall. Our kids loved it. Loads of room for them to ride their bikes too and although cycling is restricted on the residential section of the park there was no restriction in the camping areas.

Just up the hill from the site is a riding stables which offers hacks at a very reasonable price (£10 per child for 3/4 hour). Well worth it for our 4 and we followed them round so enjoyed a nice walk too.

All in all we were absolutely delighted by this site, it was so relaxing, even on a busy bank holiday weekend. And fantastic value for money! £14 per night inc hookup. No surcharge for bank hol and no minimum night stay which is very unusual.

We will be back!

This is a return visit for us. The first time was back in August '09 in a tent. Back then my kids were only 3 1/2 and 5 now they are just 7 and nearly 10. I maintain there is still nothing on the actual site for kids - but as mine are older now they just want to play on their bikes and scooters (even thought it clearly states on the gates No Bikes!). Plus we were able to walk to the other park next to the Visitors Centre (as opposed to having to drive because little legs wouldn't have walked that far).

The car park fee at the visitors centre has gone up 10p to 80p! The site fee, unbelievably has remained the same £14 incl electric per night. The last time we camped we were in a tiny tent, no electric and it was £14, and I was a little peeved back then to think you could be in the lap of luxury with heating, hot water & a telly for the same price as a tiny tent.

So - this time I'd say very good value :) (It may well go up as it goes into mid & peak season).

All in all, the area is lovely, the site is great, it has some great walks and a new adventure park just round the corner.

There are a few shops, bars and chippies by the lake and a couple of restaurants too. It's also less than 2 miles away from the Co-op in Littleborough.

I would definitely recommend this site, it's great value for money and can't wait to go back.

Stayed here on a cold January weekend to try out our new caravan. We were told to pitch on any hard standing bit and not the grass as it was waterlogged. We had plenty of room and found it easy to reverse onto our pitch. Only criticism is there is no grass between caravans so it does have a bit of a car park feel. I notice a big grass field which hook ups which would probably be better when the weather improves.

As other reviews there are plenty of pubs, take away and cafes around the lake to stop off at while walking. Beautiful scenery around this site and about 1. 5 mile to a coop.

Would definitely visit this site in the summer. £14 per night with hookup

Our niece has been on at us to give her a try at camping, and as we only live 2 miles away from Hollingworth Lake, we thought we'd try here in case things went pear-shaped and we needed a sudden drive home! We also chose this one because fires are allowed.

The site has a great location with many, many things to see and places to go within a small radius. There is a pub (The Beach) that does cheap and cheerful food, with a beer garden, on the other side of the lake. The Wine Press, a 5 minute walk away, is a more upmarket bar and restaurant and I'd recommend it highly. 20 minutes wallk would take you to The Waterside, towards Littleborough, which does fantastic food. There are several cafes by the lake, too. Nearest shopping is either Littleborough or Smithy Bridge. You're close to the train line running Manchester - Leeds. There's a horse riding stables close by.

The site is great, separated into several areas. All staff were very friendly, visible and helpful. We didn't use the shower block, what with going home in the morning, but used the toilets in the field. They were basic and kept as clean as possible by staff. There's a playground close to the site, but not belonging to it. There's a very well stocked shop on site, too.

I like the 'pitch-where-you-like' approach, but it leads to my only gripe. The fact that it's seems to be ok to leave your car anywhere alongside your unit means the field gets a bit higgledy-piggeldy, with some people parking their cars too close to other units. Also, people arriving in vans left those on the field too, which looked unsightly and spoiled the view across the field.

Not the site's fault, but a lot of the children here this weekend (especially those by us) were very noisy, and not shhhhed by their parents (who were, in fact, just as noisy). They played in and around their tents rather than off in the field or playground. We went to bed around 12 and the party next to us soon after, but they didn't quieten down for a while. I just think they didn't realise that a nice quiet voice is enough.

At £14 a night with electric, we'll definitely go back, as it's a nice site and handy, but we'll be careful to pitch in a corner.

Spent a wet bank holiday weekend at this site, it is quite a basic site, but this is reflected in the price, with a pick your pitch policy, the first field we were sent to only had a pitch next to the toilet and bins left, but we were told that we could go in a different field which was much better.

The toilets were clean and well stocked with rolls and Adam emptied the bins regularly! Although the showers in the old block are 20p and really only last 6 mins, the new ones are better but you need to buy your tokens before the shop shuts. The staff were very friendly and the girls loved the horse riding with the stables attatched to the site.

The area has some great walks and bike rides. The children enjoyed the play area near the lake and playing in the river.

Will definitely be back to this site to explore the area some more.

My self and five year old daughter, my friend and his six year old son, stayed on this site for 1 night as a test to see if our children would enjoy the camping experience. We had a great time and met some lovely people. We are already planning our next visit.

The campsite is close to the lake, the facilities are nice and clean. The camp staff are cheerful and friendly. We would definitely use the site again.

There are nice country walks, shops near the lake, a nice park nearby and the lake itself is lovely. We had fish and chips for dinner in the cafe and it was wonderful.

There are horse riding facilities/lessons nearby from 10 pounds (you may have to book in advance) check when you book! it is my daughters first camp and she gives it 1,000,000 out of 10!

There was a few midges flying around at times, but it is the country side and its all part of the experience!
