Bad points first, toilets & showers are quite along walk from your van. They are cleaned just once a day so later on can get quite untidy especially with mown grass that they do cut most days. The laundry machines are not very efficient, so even though your clothes smell clean they don't always remove any mud. The waste and chemical disposal points are near the toilets so also quite a journey. All touring pitches are hard standing so you need rock pegs ( these fake some keeping in).

Now the good points, fantastic location extremely picturesque. Loch very entertaining for the kids, we even took our kayak which meant they enjoyed hours going up and down on the lake. The pitches are a good size with a grass verge opposite to put your boat/kayak. The shop sells most essentials but if not there is a tesco in Castle Douglas around 6miles away.

I did not eat at the Thistle as some other people have but I can recommend the Crown Hotel in Castle Douglas which has a lovely separate dining area. The food was good and quite large portions for the mains.

I can also recommend a visit to the water ski school just 5 mins up the road in the car. The kids did the banana boat which was 10 each & the hubby's got a free ride watching them on the speed boat. They also tried out the rings which seemed much more fun at 15 each and another ride on speed boat for hubby. Both rides lasted about 15 mins which I thought was good value for money.

This is the best family site I have ever visited. Toilets and shower facilities are plentiful and clean. There are also laundry facilities and wifi, a well stocked shop, extensive information section with recommendations for places to eat and visit.

For kids there is a football pitch, giant chess, rope swing out over the loch, table tennis, 2 play areas and they also enjoyed looking for the fairy doors dotted around the campsite.

I loved the fact that kayaks were available to hire at 5 an hour, the space (you are not wedged together), beautiful views across the loch from all around the site and the friendly staff.

If you want a campsite which offers views, family facilities and water activities this is just the ticket. We did tent with no electric but there are electric pitches, wigwams, caravan hardstandings and statics available.

Nearby there are watersports and outdoor centres and further afield there are amazing beaches about 1/2 an hour away. There is extensive walking on the doorstep but it is great just chilling on site with the kids.

Our favourite family camping site.

Returned here once again after a lovely stay a few years ago. The landscape is so beautiful. We don't require electric so were able to camp on the large tent field which has clean and well maintained toilet and shower facilities. Since our last visit there is now adventure equipment for children. Nearby Castle Douglas has everything you might need. A lovely stay once again.

Been here twice and first time was a complete wash out with rain, unfortunate as they site looked great. However, second time in May the weather turned in our favour. Really got a feel for the site. Toilet\shower block in porta cabins at tent area were good enough but small for a big lad like myself. Clean up area quite open and in a chilly evening takes a bit of bravery but water very hot and plentiful. Only a hand ful of hook ups so unless you book early you will not get one. Owner was helpful and adviced us on a good pitch and pointed out all the facilities. To be honest, the place is huge so I think it would be rare not to get a pitch and loads of space for kids to play. A few play areas for them as well and fishing on the loch (permit available at shop). There are other older toilet and shower blocks up past the shop so plenty for our visit but could imagine they'd get busy if the site was packed. Boats are available for hire, life vests included. There are a few pubs close by and Castle Douglas a short drive away with shops, bank and takeaways. A great site when its sunny but miserable (just like any camp site) when its raining, but this is more to do with the potential greatness of the site if the weathers good. All in all a good site that we'll visit again.

Everything you need in a campsite for a family and dog.

Very friendly site no rowdy behaviour or booming music, great for the kids with the kayaks and the loch side, you know its good when the kids don't want to leave the site. Nice big field adjacent the campsite for dog walking- our Labrador had a great time bouncing about. Clean facilities - nice showers. Spent 4 nights in tent and came back following week for 3 nights in a site caravan which was great, clean and tidy.

Will definitely be returning. And a great fish and chip shop in castle douglas for a good selection of fast food types to choose from.

Just returned from this amazing site, what can I say perfect location just of the beaten track but close enough to civilisation if you need it,

Local attractions to many to list but the red kite feeding station is a must

Staff so accommodating nothing is a problem and the facilities are spotless and A1

I won't recommend this to my friends as its going to be my guilty pleasure
