Arrived late doing the end to end cycle. Tent area was some distance from the toilets through a bit of a muddy, overgrown path. The site was ok but had not been mown for some time which meant getting wet feet every time we left the tent.

Toilets/ showers were dirty yet there was only one other tent on the site indicating less than frequent cleaning rota. The state of repair also left something to be desired. In the morning I paid at the office which was clean and well maintained, why couldn`t this spill over into the customers experience?

Great site. Small, secluded, basic camp site for 'wildish' overnighting. Realistically priced as facilities are limited but free and clean. Lots of hot water for showers and washing up.

We were on bikes and were able to chain them to a nearby tree but cars had to be left in a hard standing area away from the tents. Other campers obviously respected the wilderness feel of the place and there were no problems with noise or litter.

I suspect if you want to let children to be wild and free but in a safe place, then it's great as there are trees, a stream and plenty of wild life. (Our daughter would have loved it when she was small.) If you want games' rooms and play areas then it's not for you.

Just come back from 4 nights stay at barnbrock, the site is situated in kilbarchan.

If you are looking for a base camp for days out then this is ideal. It is situated down a single track road but is perfectly located for the west of Scotland i.E. Glasgow, loch Lomond also nearby is RSPB lochwinnoch.

Whilst we were camping we had a few people camping over night using it as a stop over.

There is ample free hot water for washing up and free shower facilities also the toilet block is always kept clean and tidy there is no fridge or freezer facilities for keeping things cool.

The facilities themselves are very basic with no ehu but please note though the camping field has a lot of mole hills.

Also barnbrock doesn't allow caravans, motorhomes or dogs on site.

The new block mentioned in the previous preview is only for group use not campers use we use the old block.

Also when camping on the field nearest the road use the path that runs beside the picnic table to get to the field as the other path does get rather boggy.

Another good point is to park your car at the gate just before barnbrock to unload and load your car, as we had to carry all our camping equipment from the car park and it is quite a trek down the slippy slopes to the camping ground.

I will definitely book this site again.

The rangers were brilliant and very friendly and for three adults it was only £12 a night as the price is per person not per tent.

So to sum up this site is absolutely brilliant if you are looking for a quiet getaway or as a base camp whilst exploring the area by car or bicycle.

It is very quiet and peaceful.

Closed when I arrived, but had instructions to pay through the letter box. For a cycling tourist, a punishing hill climb / push to get there from Lochwinnock village.

Although I didn't see a soul apart from another solo camper in an adjacent field, it was a reasonable night, with tourist information in the washing up area and a large local map attached to the wall outside. The toilets and showers were definitely adequate.

The picnic tables need some attention, making sure they are cleaned of bird droppings as part of the regime. Apart from its location at the top of a great hill, I have no other real complaints!

We stayed at the wigwmans at Barnbrock site. If you have never stayed in wigwams before then they are small wooden huts. These ones are owned by the council - there is no warden on site so you pick up the key at Castle Semple - its no hassle really, the main road passes Castle Semple before you get to Barnbrock.
There are 8 wigwams in total on site. Six are the more basic wigwam (the ones we stayed in). Unlike many other wigwam sites these ones do not provide mattresses -and do not have a raised area to sleep in. The floor is covered with lino and you just put your airbed on that. They do have lighting and heating but no plug sockets. The larger wigwams do have bedding on a raised platform. The basic wigwam costs £20 per night, the larger ones £30 - the small ones sleep 3-4 and the larger 4-5.

Facilities. When we went a new toilet and kitchen block had been completed - sadly we could only look in the locked door - there was some problem with the builder and a few minor things still needed finished - I'd assume that it will be up and open for summer 2007. The current facilities are ok but not heated- only one ladies toilet and shower though (and too cold to venture in!)

There are no play facility on the site - although our children (two three year olds) had great fun playing in the stream the runs behind the campsite. I'd imagine older children might be a bit bored.

There is no shops within walking distance but it is only a short drive to Lochwinnoch and 10 miles or so to Largs, Wemmyss Bay etc.

In conclusion, I'd go again (especially if new toilet/kitchen block is open) a good base for touring if its too cold to camp, or you just fancy something different. Also is a lot cheaper than some other wigwam sites which charge per person (at one wigwam site we had to pay £7.50 a night for our 5 month old!).
