Nice little campsite surrounded by hills. The staff were friendly and polite. While the facilities only looked quite modest they were clean and tidy and perfectly ok. The shower was nice and warm and not one where you have to keep pushing the button. Thankfully.

The site was easily accessible from the main A road but fairly remote - no pub or village within easy walking distance. Nor was there any TV or phone signal.

What you do get is lots of wildlife, hills, footpaths and walks around the reservoir. All for a very reasonable price.

So if you like to 'get away from it' - this is a very nice site.

Just spent a relaxing 2 days here. Lovely site all pitches level on mesh hard standing well drained despite all the rain recently. On arriving on site very helpful wardens gave us a choice of pitches and expertly helped this hopeless reverser to get caravan on to the pitch. Site has a new (only a few weeks old) reception and shop which is well stocked.

There is also a video library which is useful as tv reception is only available via satellite. Toilet block is very clean, only 2 showers but plenty of hot water and never had to queue. Easy access on to Pennine way for those who like an energetic walk but there is also a nice easy walk around the reservoir.

Pub is a good 3 mls away but who needs one when you are on such a beautiful, relaxing & welcoming site. Looking forward to returning soon

Spent a couple of nights at Crowden to do some walking around the area. As the site is located part way along the A628 between Sheffield and Manchester, there is nothing really close by in the way of shops, pubs, etc. , so is geared more towards the walker.

The single track lane off the main road isn’t really a problem, even for the larger vans (despite previous reviews); just make sure that you don’t miss the turning off the main road as there are few places to turn round. Was met on the Friday night by a friendly warden (Mark) who pointed us in the direction of the usual facilities (toilet block, showers, drying room (although we didn’t need it), chemical waste, etc. ). Was even told which the best pitches were in case we got any sun. ! Although close to the main road, can honestly say that you can’t hear the traffic that rumbles past. Note for motorhome users, there is no facility for empting your waste tank.

Spent Saturday walking / cycling along the old railway line that now forms part of the Trans-Pennine Trail, passed the reservoirs towards the Woodhead Tunnels and old station. The wardens had given us directions and a hand-drawn map (small donation to the flower fund) pointing us in the right direction. Sunday we met up with friends (were allowed to the leave the van on site as it wasn’t busy) and walked up Crowden Little Brook on to Black Hill, passing the wreckage of two RAF Meteors that crashed into the hillside in 1951. The site reception doubles as a shop selling the usual odd and sods you might have forgot but also sells hot drinks, cakes, ice creams, etc. So was a delightful sight at the end of the walk.

Overall, the site is relatively small and frequented by back packers walking the Pennine Way. The facilities (only two showers but this didn’t appear to be a problem whilst we were there) are well maintained, the atmosphere is relaxed and the wardens are friendly, always stopping to chat and full of information about the local area.

Being so close to home, this is somewhere we’ll definitely go back to; just don’t understand why we haven’t been before.

Stayed for two weeks on this wonderful site. In our caravan with awning.

There is a long list of reasons to stay here, Nat and Mark were very helpful and run the site fantastically I cannot fault them.

Two showers that on 1st impression look very old but they are deceivingly good lots of free hot water.

The toilets were very clean found the etched graffiti from the 70s on the inside of the doors amusing.

Well stocked shop with all that you need to get by rather than the 10 min drive down into Glossop or nearby village. Glossop has large supermarkets and of course one of the largest caravan retailers in the country always worth a visit.

The site was very easy to get into although worried by the reviews previously. Pitches are grass with grass/plastic mesh for the awning. Very flat with 16 amp (did not trip once).

Satellite was possible even with hills in the direction but not a problem.

Phone reception was bad Orange/T-Mobile 1-2 bar Vodaphone 2 bar O2 1bar but if you move around it will lose signal.

This site is as close as you get to being in the countryside away from everything.

There are loads of walks straight from the site also visit the quarry above the site wow its fantastic well worth the walk.

Bikes were a bit harder to use due to the very busy main road outside the site but I must add that you do not hear it.

The Pennine way passes just a little walk from the site and many back packers appear and disappear regularly

The site has a drying room and washing up area.

There are refurbishments on going now with a new reception and soon to be larger showers.

I will revisit this site in years to come as it’s just so nice.

I know that most people don’t read to the bottom so I place the only criticism here the working farm nearby has dogs that do not stop barking for what seems like hours we thought it might be kennels but looks like just 3 dogs oh well not the end of the world.

After an exhausting(still much snow left at the 5th of april) first stage of the Pennine Way, I arrived at the lovely Crowden Caravan Camp Site. I was immediately put into the drying room, to warm up with a large cup of tea(free!).

Very comforting also the refreshing shower in the very clean and tidy facilities.

Nice spot for my tent, well cultivated grass area.

Wonderful internet-support for organising the return easyjet ticket home for the next day.

Nat and her husband really gave big and strong support for someone so exhausted as I was.

Never underestimate nature esp. Not in the mountains!

No midges at this time of year but still a little on the cold side. Reception very welcoming and the Site is in a very good location for walking. Went for long walk over towards Mossley and visited the pub recommended in Tintwistle The Bulls Head on our way back. Great pub and had a good couple of hours but it is a 3 mile walk back to the site. All the grounds are very well kept and the toilet area was very clean. If you are not walking or going into the great outdoors there isn't much to do. We will be visiting again.
