Southwest of Bayonne and Biarritz, a gateway to the western Pyrenees, with an easy scenic drive to the market town of Olorons St Marie to the east. Easily reached from the site is the spectacular Gorge de Kakoueta and the ancient church and village of St Engrace.
Driving from the north, through Tardets after passing through the square, on the D918 a slip road drops down right off the main road, and crosses a concrete suspension bridge over the River Saison, to reveal the campsite on the right, just passing the sign to enter the village of Abense de Haut. There is a simple nature walk through the woods from the campsite, leading into Tardets. In Tardets are a few shops, including a good artisan bakery, and two small general stores and a very nice cake shop.
Description
The entrance reveals half a dozen cabins, one of which is the office, the rest are for rental (there are a couple more within the site). Behind the office is the toilet block - see below.
A firm track leads round the site, which is effectively on two levels, the slightly higher level closer to the toilet block and the lower level being nearer to the river Saison. There is plenty of shade from mature trees. The pitches are not marked, just pitch up on the grass, there are plenty of electricity points and easy access to water.
Facilities
There is a single facilties block, with spacious washing up/laundry area and a reasonable number of toilets, showers and washing spaces. One of the toilets only is continental-style and this one doubles as the chemical disposal point. The showers are not roomy, but adequate. Hot water and toilet paper are included. There is no swimming pool, nor outside games area, but there is a sitting room with settee and TV. There is WiFi available.
Conclusion.
This site feels different! The owner Mme Lamarque is committed to looking after the environment and just about everything that can be re-cycled is. A great place to spread out, relax and take it easy, or do a little exploring.
