If you are looking for a peaceful, scenic, 'off-grid' location then this is the campsite for you. It is small and basic - a single field with just one portaloo and some cold water sinks. There are two electric hook-ups which are in the bottom corner of the field, shaded by trees so they don't have the best view - bring a long lead if you want to use one and still have a choice of where to pitch. There's no phone or TV reception so you have no choice but to chill out. There are two fire pits in the centre of the field with low benches round them and a couple of wooden picnic tables which campers can use.

Louise, the owner, is really friendly and helpful and the site has a lovely atmosphere. It's on the fringe of the Forest of Dean so incredibly green - all you can see are trees and fields, and the only noise (apart from other campers) is birdsong. We only stayed for one night, but if we'd been there for longer I suspect that there are some lovely walks to do.

The field is on a slope - there are a few spots which are flatter than others - but you might need chocks if you are in a van. Another thing to bear in mind is that the entrance is quite narrow and the run up into the field is a bit steep. It wouldn't be suitable for large towing caravans, and big motorhomes might struggle as well. It's better suited to tents and camper vans.

If fancy facilities are your thing then this isn't the site for you, but if you want to get away from it all and really relax I'd recommend it.

We had a lovely 2 days here. Really lovely spot with a gorgeous view, very clean field and some perfect hammock spots. Perfect for getting away from it all. This site is suitable for those who like a basic site. There is a (clean) portaloo in the corner of the field and one (cold water) tap, some picnic benches, a couple of fire pits and that's about it! Firewood on sale for £5 a wheelbarrow load, and we paid £14 each night for our tent. This site won't suit everyone but if you are up for no frills camping which is what we love - you won't find any better. The owners were really lovely - very welcoming, and let our kids pick their raspberries and visit the chickens! One improvement for me would be a hot water tap so you don't have to boil a kettle to wash up - but apart from that I couldn't fault it - we will definitely be back!

The perfect campsite for us. Simple and quiet, the view is fantastic and the owners friendly and helpful. We only stayed one night as it was a last minute get away but will definitely return.

One electric hook up, a tap and one (clean) Portaloo are the only amenities but if that's all you need don't hesitate to book!

We called the site on the spur of the moment on the Saturday of a bank holiday weekend; the owner was very friendly and we were assured of a space. We arrived late afternoon and it is certainly a little gem of a site; a hideaway as the CCC book suggested. There is only a chemical toilet in the corner of the field so be prepared to take your own loo. By the end of a bank holiday weekend the chemical loo was struggling a bit ( families with children perhaps not flushing it fully!). Having said that the owner did her utmost to keep it stocked with paper and fresheners.

It was very quiet - few other tents were there - all grass pitches in the field, and a really nice touch several firepits for you to light your own camp fire. Plenty of dry firewood to be garnered in the woods nearby.

There are numerous walks straight from the site into woods or down to the River Wye and the Wye Valley Path. A number of very good pubs in about 1/2 hour or 1hours walk - The Inn at Penallt and the New Inn at Redbrook ( English side of the river) and our favourite The Boat at Redbrook ( Welsh side of the river).

Monmouth in reach with good array of shops including a Waitrose and Aldi.

Would certainly consider going back there for a long weekend.
