South of France is getting overcrowded with campers high season, so we decided to travel around and look for alternatives. It is so easy to knock a location but Camping Californie Plage was disappointing. It is a very large well maintained mature site. Left side down to the sea have static chalets, right side down are the camping pitches. The toilet facilities are excellent and clean. Located at the centre, if you pitched near the sea you have long walk back! Could be busy mid-summer. We look for the sun on holiday, but with mature trees on pitches, which are very high, you are continually in the shade. Some pitches near the beach are not so shaded. The beach area has been built up with large bolders, possibly to stop camp side flooding. There are no water or drainage facilities on pitches, water stand points are scattered. So servicing can be a long walk to the toilet area.

There is a very uninspiring road entrance leading away from Vias, past a travellers' Europark site, until you come across a seemingly large purpose built camping complex, called Le Mediterranee Plage. This happens to be the sister site of Californie plage, which is 100m further down a dead-end road. We stayed three nights and not really impressed, even as a stop-over. Reception was lengthy by comparison with a 30 euro deposit for identity wrist bands. There is a choice of 3 or 6 amp, the latter carrying a suplementary charge. There is a covered pool, which looks good from afar, but lacks renovation. A small beach is within walking distance, but again is not what would expect from such close access to the prime Mediterranean. It was a detour to pitch up at this site. I doubt if we shall return.
