I have a large family who have never been camping. About five weeks ago we went looking at camping gear and purchased this tent. The reason we chose this tent was price. As beginners I didn't want to pay out alot of money on something that may not be used again. On Saturday we decided to go camping to barmouth. On arrival we were a bit nervous as not even testing the tent or putting one up before. My 14 year old daughter erected it with her dad while me and 3 kids went to loo. When we came back it was up, so easy it took about twenty minutes for this to go up. Loads of room for sleeping and managed to store clothes and food comfortably at front of the tent. We had brilliant weekend and cant wait to go away next week with this great tent. I think I could get hooked.

Me and my partner claude had no trouble erecting the base camp. We believed the tent to go up very easy with a bit of elbow grease and camping knowledge
Once the tent was erect me and claude found enough space within it, wasn't like the usual tight squeeze to get in. The entrance was nice and big so I fitted in very well and didn't have to get in any awkward positions to cross the threshold
We found the ropes really useful as with our old tent we had black guylines so me and claude were always falling on top of each other with this tent at least we can wait until were inside ;)
Overall this tent is perfect for a couple or three as we found out, one night on our travels. I would definitely recommend this tent to anyone that wants a stable roof over their heads yet there is enough room to play with ;)

Further to the last review I did - we have now been away twice. Derbyshire in May and France (Epernay) in July. We had no problems at all despite being novice campers. The tent was easy to erect and take down both times. We found the advice to put the back two ring/pins together first made the tensioning easy. We bought a cheap groundsheet and created a custom footprint which was well worth doing as it keeps the tent bottom clean and also makes it ever so easy to pin the tent out straight when putting it up. There was no problem getting everything in the bag (inc the extra groundsheet) as we rolled everything round the pole bag which makes a good former.
I found a Vango Sun Canopy on Ebay and it fits a treat providing a shady area - hopefully it will be a boon in rain too, avoiding water ingress when opening the door. I have uploaded a pic taken in France.

A great tent. Bought at Go Outdoors on a special offer. Really easy to erect, did'nt have any trouble with the ring and pin like some have posted. Did have a problem with the front pole, but some minor adjustments to the guys sorted that. I know its a 5 man tent, but we leave the divider out and use the bedroom as a storage and dressing area. It is more than ample for the two of us.
As has been posted before, the wife tends to take enough clothes for a fortnight and Imelda Marcos is a non starter in the shoe dept. (Nine pairs, on a three day, two night stay in the Peak District). All in all, a good tent. Weatherproof, stable, comfortable and I would definitely recommend it.

This tent is excellent used recently in Scotland ,
The weather for three days was appalling , rain, wind, but not a single drop of rain came in , no leaks . The whole tent stood up well to wind and for two people it was snug .
Not sure about the five person claim , think three people would be enough and comfortable .
We had to take tent down in pouring rain and wind again it was easier than I thought it would be. Folded up well and as long as tent is hung up or repitched within 24 hours to dry it there should not be any mould problems .
Pitching was easy took about 45 minutes including pegging out.
A very very good tent , good price and well made , I am well pleased with it.

This is our third tent in a few months 1st too small 2nd manufacturer problems, this tent gets top marks.
Easy enough to put up and plenty of space for the two of us. On an evening it was cold but there was plenty of room in the porch for our 2 chairs and table.
Says its sleeps 5 that would a bit too cosy for my liking, 3 could sleep comfortable.
It didn't rain when we were away so cant comment on the waterproof rating. Tent appeared to be on good quality and plenty of pockets for storage.
Would recommend this tent to others

If you have a problem with wind then you have put it up wrong. If you cant get it up in less than 15-20 mins then you are doing it wrong. SEE BELOW for pitching guide. (I will post on you tube soon) We bought it as a smaller tent for our weekend tent and it is absolutely brilliant for the price. It is a HI-Gear so go-outdoors own brand. Wait till it is available in their numerous sales. £49-£79 the RRP is for marketing purposes only.
PITCHING INSTRUCTIONS
1) Peg rear pin rings into ground, webs determine the distance.
2) Thread poles through main dome sleeves but not the front pole (The one with Grey Joiner)
Yet)Put rear ring pins into poles.
4)Raise tent (easier if assistant goes inside although possible on own)
5) Put in front pins (easy if the material is properly free and not catching on the poles) and peg rings.
6)If windy set upwind guys first.
7) Make sure dome webs are square.
8)Front pole through sleeve, pin and guy.
9) Attach inner tent. Front attached groundsheet determines the shape of the front area, leaves about 3 to 4 inches of grass showing (YOU EITHER LOVE THIS OR HATE IT). The only niggle.
10) Re-set front shape and peg,
11)Peg the rest of the sod cloths. Guys and dome into position.
12) Enjoy a good nights sleep in a tent that is STABLE in winds and Very good in rain.
For the price excellent.

I`ve done a fair share of camping but in smaller tents so myself and my partner decided to invest in one of these before heading to Scotland in 2009 mainly because of the bargain price & because we fancied the bigger space. We stopped on route to overnight on the Hardknock pass in the Lakes intending to use our 3 man tent as it was only one night but we couldn`t wait to try the Atakama so we put it up.
The pole system is not unlike our 3 man so no problems encountered. Our next stop was a one nighter at Oban & everything was fine. The third night was was Durness on the north west tip of Scotland, on arrival there was a pretty high wind blowing but we decided we fancied a sea view & commenced the erection process near the cliff edge,it was of course a wrong decision & two poles broke during the attempt so we found a more sheltered spot, lashed the poles with string and successfully pitched although the tension looked very odd, I don`t blame the manufacturer for this by the way.
Next stop was on Orkney by which time we had obtained some gaffa tape to reinforce the repair (you don`t find replacement poles this far north). Another very windy night claimed another pole possibly because of the already weakened structure but we continued the holiday & enjoyed it. Other windy conditions coming on to a corner showed a tendency to force the the poles into a reverse arc so if you intend to use one of these in such terrain I advise you obtain a spare set of guy ropes to double up on the corners & peg them at slightly opposite angles to reinforce the set of the poles.
This tent is made by Gellert so 11mm poles cut to length fit fine.We done the Outer Hebrides this year (2010) and subsequently Cornwall with no disasters until we last took the tent down when we found one of the living area poles had broken, we have no idea why so I`ll dismantle & replace the section this winter because I intend to head north again in 2011.
To summarise, I have had problems, but don`t blame the tent & I think it stands side by side with much more expensive tents of similar design.
Note:- We can erect this tent in 20 mins working as a team and would suggest fitting both front ring pins first as it spreads the tension tape & offers a reference to square on to.

Bought this from Go-Outdoors as a cheepo festival tent. Got it for the bargain price of fifty quid which you cant argue with. Very easy to pitch and can be done single handedly in around 20 mins. OK it does not have a SIG which we are used to but the bedroom pod is sewn in. Little storage pockets sewn into the bedroom pod and the living area. A few windows in the living area too which is great. Cant comment on the HH as it did not rain but going by the previous reviews it seems to hold up. All in all a great wee buy if you can pick it up at the price we paid. Don't however think it is worth its RRP of 170 notes.

We got this tent as we are nearly total novices and as they say 'the price was right'. We got the tent in the sales and can only sing it's praises. Despite both having the camping equivalent of two left feet, we found the tent very easy to erect. Despite all the rain and wind the weather gods could throw at us (West coast of Scotland), we stayed completely dry.The tent was stable throughout our stay. Only complaint the side door has no Midge netting (essential in Scotland). All in all a great tent for beginners and with additions,(see photos above), also a keeper.

Manufacturer's Description
With large living /storage and sleeping areas, the Atakama 5 is ideal for families having a long weekend away, or any groups of campers who may need space to store gear and spread around.
It is a double skin tent, with the outer pitched first to keep things simple, and a breathable inner to keep you comfortable.
The outer flysheet is 190T PU coated polyester with taped seams and a hydrostatic head of 3000, meaning it's rugged enough to handle scrapes and waterproof enough to take the heaviest downpours.
For warmer conditions, the breathable inner and large side and front doors will make sure the inside is ventilated enough so you and your kit are not overheating. The front door can be extended out as a canopy using the steel porch poles, offering shelter from sun or showers.
The porch/living area has a pre-attached groundsheet, making it easy for you to keep a clear, clean space for furniture, bikes etc., and keeping the bedroom area draught-free.
For extra stability, the tent has pre-attached double guylines, so it will easily withstand any strong gusts of wind. The guylines themselves are bright and reflective, to help you to find the tent in the dark, and to stop other campers from tripping over them if you're in a busy campsite.
Other useful features include slick pole sleeves to aid pitching, fire-retardant fabrics, and large windows to allow maximum light in if you need it.
A simple, yet versatile tent for easy group camping.
