4 Reviews of the Day Shelter

By: Stunix  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2007   Rating:   Date: 02/03/2011

We love this thing! we camp either in our 7 birth Aspen, or in our surfer van & trailer but we always take this. The main reason I want to big it up is that its tough. 3 years ago we had to use it in the back garden to protect a load of equipment over a very.VERY stormy winter. I didn't expect it to last but after 4 months of winter tent torture, its still going. Don't misunderstand, it has faults, but its a bit like the knight in Monty Pythons film, it wont quit.

The bad points,it's a nightmare to erect alone(hold one side, other side collapses), it needs to be very tight to get back in the bag, mozzie net easily ripped(but external flap provides shelter)& id prefer all 4 sides to open. All this is easily overshadowed by its resilience. We very often pitch it over a picnic table then fill it with food crates and gas fridge to use as a communal kitchen, seating 6 with space to move.

We also have a 'day tent' the kwik lock one, and it is same size and shape but 4 times as big when packed. A tarp between the 2 makes a shelter for a dozen happy campers in gale force winds on a headland. When it eventually dies, I'll get another one (maybe two), simples.(£89)

We bought one of these to use as a kitchen/dining area with our smaller tents and for longer holidays where we take a lot more gear!

The dayroom is a great size and is versatile in the fact that you can adapt the side walls and windows to suit your location and set up needs, However! there really isn't anything to shout about with this one, As others have said, there could be more pegging points along the sides to increase stability in winds and we had the same problem with water flooding into the living area on a couple of occasions!. The problem lies with the pegging of the mudflaps (in that you can't!),as soon as there is a breeze, the flaps move and create a gap around the bottom thus letting in the elements. I have resorted to pegging straight through the groundsheet and mudflaps to try to resolve this and have had some effect but it's not ideal (cling-ons came in handy too) .

Another problem lies with the fact that if you are using it in wet/cooler weather and the doors/mesh screens are closed, there is a big condensation problem as there is no other ventilation, we have had condensation literally running down the walls and dripping from the ceiling :-(

All in all, I would say that this is not a bad dayroom and is great to use in fair/dry weather but not so great in rain and wind.

Well, my review will contrast sharply with that given by Freebirdy. Perhaps they were made better a few years ago, who knows (looks exactly the same though), but for family camping we wouldn't be without ours now (and it's already been with us for 4 years!). Firstly, ours does have side skirt pegging points (2 per side) plus further pegging points to secure the door flaps when not in use. There are 2 doors (opposite sides so you can sit with plenty of extra space under the flaps if required [we have sat 14 at a table under ours]) with the other two sides having fine mesh windows with zipped flap covers. I also think that the steel/fibreglass pole mix works well as it allows a certain amount of flex in windier conditions (don't forget that Khyam make a rigipod version for another 120 or so!). The groundsheet is separate but we no longer use ours and have now opted for foam mat tiles (far easier and less mess). I replaced the guys after our first trip as in 2006 they were supplied in a matching grey colour which was impossible to see. There are guy lines at each leg and another on each side at the top centre (if a door is open the guy cannot be used on that side though). I would thoroughly recommend this as a day tent.

Bought to use as a camp kitchen. Barely stood up to wind, and not very high winds at that! Could have done with two extra pegging points along the window sides to help stability. Waterproof fly sheet was great, not any leaks or through the zips but because of the standard ground sheet that barely fits the 'footprint' of the tent and side skirts that have no pegging points at all, rain seeped in and the whole floor area flooded. Wish I had bought similar design that has all metal poles, this model has metal uprights and flexi pole roof rods. Why ???? That aspect is not made clear in description. Will do for next few camping trips then going to upgrade as can't stand the worry of going off for the day and returning to site to find all my kitchen stuff scattered around or the tent blown away!
