3 Reviews of the Family Khamsin
By: Alfresco65 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2005 Rating: Date: 02/08/2011
We owned one of these for many years and camped many nights in NW Scotland and then all the way across Europe to Corsica and Sardinia. We camped in it with our 3 children and it always performed extremely well in all weathers. It is now getting a little small to fit our 3 kids in one bedroom and last summer the fly sheet tore after years of UV light and hot temperatures. We have upgraded to a larger tent but I still miss the Khamsin as it was simple , strong, light, has a small footprint but is big enough for me to stand up in.

The design of this tent is quite good but it has one major flaw, the guy points. There are simply not enough and not high enough on the tent to support the structure in windy conditions, the tent flexes far too much even in moderate winds. The tent is sold as a three season tent and it is hardly adequate in my experience as a summer tent, I was on a family camp site in summer and it became windy and the tent flexed so badly that a main aluminium pole broke, this ripped the fly sheet so badly that we had to pack up and go home. There were other tents around us that were of a lower spec and they did not have any problem.
I have been camping for many years both family and high mountain,I have also been camping in quite severe conditions and feel that this tent completely under-performs what should be expected of it as a three season tent. I think that as well as extra guy points some internal bracing would help because the semi geodesic design is simply not up to the task and this would add very little to the weight.

We often go on our holidays by Cycle and Train, so need a lightweight Tent, We have used this for 6 years and it has done the job.
As a lightweight it has to well pegged and regularly waterproofed.
We camp for, on average, 30 nights a year.
As you would expect it is not as robust as a heavy tent so it has to be put up carefully ( it takes about 15 minutes to erect although it took double this time when we first got it). Once up it will withstand storms well. We were once the only tent left on a site in Snowdonia and the kids slept through the storm!
