5 Reviews of the Calisto 400
By: Sool Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating: Date: 17/08/2012
My wife and I came very close to purchasing a Vango Icarus 500, but had reservations about the fragility of the fibreglass support rods. Reviews on the web confirmed our fears about these regularly breaking; hence we broadened our search and discovered the steel-poled Calisto 400, which we bought via ebay for £175.
In many respects the two models are very similar, but the Calisto is a much stronger tent, albeit at the cost of its heavier weight. There is an informative video on YouTube of the two tents side by side in a gale.
The tent has changed slightly compared to the pictures above. It now has two additional wings at the front which effectively create something of a porch.
Like others, the first couple of times we erected it, we struggled to insert the metal pins into the ends of the poles, but this became easier with practise.
It would be difficult or impossible to erect this tent single-handedly but it's a breeze to put up when there are two of you.
The tent has bags of room for the two of us, and we once managed to squeeze four seated adults into the living area. Being able to stand up makes a huge difference, and generally makes camping seem more civilised.
We don't feel the need to optional bolt-on canopy but it could be useful if there were more than two people, or if dogs were a factor. We may consider buying the footprint at some point.
We are delighted with this tent, and are most happy to recommend it.

This is our first large tent which we purchased from S.K Camping who are very knowledgeable, friendly and are happy to price match.
Positives
Space to stand up (I'm 6'2) Sturdy in windy conditions Easy to pitch Plenty of space Handy storage pockets Dark sleeping compartment Good value Sewn in ground sheet
Negatives
Heavy (due to steel poles) Standard pegs aren't great (probably the same with all tents)
Along with the tent, we also purchased the footprint which is brilliant as it is easier to clean a ground sheet than the bottom of a tent. We also bought the canopy which was invaluable for keeping wet and muddy shoes and clothing separate from the main living area and provides additional space for living and cooking. I would definitely recommend both the footprint and the canopy.
The only thing with the canopy is that it is a shame it only has a front entrance and no side doors - as it is bit enclosed to safely cook in.

This is our first quite large tent. For our first go at a pitch with this tent, we did it quite quickly and easily and in the rain. We like the steel poles, although quite heavy very durable.
It is only a 4 berth tent and there is only two of us so plenty of room, even if there was 4 people there would be plenty of room. The carpet is a nice touch adding comfort and a cozy feel.
Would definitely recommend having the canopy with the tent so all other items can be placed in this area leaving the rest of the tent cozy and clean.
The weekend we first pitched the tent it non-stopped rained from Friday evening to Sunday morning. Extremely heavy at times and the tent did not leak once. We are very impressed with our new tent and highly recommend.

Bought the display model of this tent from our local camping shop which was sadly closing down. We wanted something big enough to walk around in with a decent HH rating, and the shop staff pointed us towards the Calisto.
The steel poles mean it is heavy, so you really do need a car for camping trips with this one, but it performs well in windy conditions (it was well tested during a windy week in Dorset). We found it quite tricky to get the pins into the pole ends, even with the tension straps let out to their maximum, but this was the hardest part of pitching the tent. It is quite straightforward to do with 2 people once you get the hang of it.
The bedroom pod has plenty of room for 2 adults, I think 4 would be a squeeze. The living area is big enough for a table, chairs and all our equipment, but we are thinking about getting the canopy to give more storage space on long trips.
Overall, we are very happy with this tent and would recommend it.

Just bought a Vango Calisto 400 for use as a Weekend/Festival tent and it had it's first outing last weekend. My criteria for buying this tent were:
Enough head room for 6'2'+
Sewn in ground sheet throughout
3000HH
Enough space for 2 adults + gear
One bedroom access only ie no mesh divider
Current model - spares readily available.
This tent covered all the above and much more.
It stood up to heavy rain and windy conditions very well. No sagging, flapping or leaks.
It's pretty straight forward to erect. Hardest part is getting the pins into the pole sections. Ensure all the tension straps are let out to their maximum and that the roof sections to the poles are inserted all the way in to the side poles. Insert the pins whilst the poles are on the ground and then stand it up. Once this is done, the rest is easy.
The bedroom section is very spacious. Plenty of room both sides of a double mattress. Ideal for two adults. Bit of a push for four!
Lots of light and ventilation in the porch area.
Handy storage pockets throughout. Easily seated four adults and a large table during a heavy rain storm.
I would definitely recommend this tent - excellent value for money and as it is a new model, it will probably come down in price. I purchased it online from Taunton Leisure for £174.99 (RRP £240) and it was delivered within 24hrs.
A VERY HAPPY CAMPER!
