6 Reviews of the Athena 600

I would echo all the positive comments made about the great size, flexibility and family friendly aspects of this tent.

We used it for the first time in July 2012 in Cornwall. We had reasonable weather during the days but the nights were quite windy - 25 -40mph winds. The tent moved about a bit but stood up really well. We also had the front extension - this flapped about a bit more but its not really designed for high winds so no complaints on that front.

The only real downside was that we could not use the side porch poles above the right-hand door. Once inserted in the appropriate ‘slots’, they press very tightly into the flysheet and look like they are going to tear it – because we have the front extension it was not an issue but if you are likely to want to use the side door porch watch out for this.

Despite the manufacturers advertising, its not really a 6 berth tent - unless you like being packed in like sardines - but it would accommodate a family of 4 very comfortably, giving plenty of storage. The front extension doubles the living area and I would consider it a ‘must have’.

Unlike other reviewers I cannot, no matter how hard I try, get the tent back into its bag. Has anyone got a diagram?

We bought our tent in July of 2011 and have now used it 3 times, it is easy to put up, only our 2 young children slow us down! The space it provides is fantastic, we choose to all sleep in the 4 berth bedroom and use the space where the 2 berth bedroom would go for all our gear. We've been fortunate enough to have good weather so far but the quality of the tent means I have no concerns about the rain, and we have used the large space the tent provides as shade for our 2 children and dog on hotter days. I agree with another reviewer that the side porch is next to useless and have searched in vain for a side extension canopy.

But overall this is a fantastic tent, priced very keenly that I would be happy to recommend to anyone who asked.

We purchased this tent as it offered much more living space than our first tent (HiGear Mojave 5) and was on offer in our local Go Outdoors store, half price £210.

Used it once so far andf the elements put it to the test, very windy and lots of rain on a cliff top in Filey. The tent withstood all mother nature threw at it for 3 nights. We are a family of 4 and loved the space the new tent gave us

Just come back from a six night camping trip using our Athena 600 for the first time, and I must say it is a really fantastic tent!

We had never put the tent up before, and it took two of us approximately 45 minutes. It was really simple to erect and now that we have done it once, it will only probably take 20 minutes to put up in the future.

I really liked the fact that there were some strong tent pegs for the corners, and that all four of the poles were the same size.

The living space is really large, and there are two bedroom compartments, one which could be split down further.

We even purchased a front canopy with the tent, although did not need to put this up as the tent was so large anyway.

The only downside is that some of the tent pegs for the guy ropes were a little flimsy and when we packed away, two of them were bent and had to be discarded.

An excellent purchase!

After much consideration and research we ended up at Go outdoors looking to buy one out of three High Gear tents. After looking through them all, a long chat with a sales person and much debating we ended up with this, the Vango Athena.

My parents bought the tent as they are starting to get into camping, they are in their 60's.

They have found this tent easy to erect, and looking around the 20 minute mark from fly sheet to final peg.

The tent is more than big enough for when the four of us stay in it and has stayed dry so far, although not much wind and rain has tested it at present.

We also purchased the fly sheet and carpet as well as the tent, for the value we have been over joyed so far!

Bought this after comparing Outwell Montana & Nevada, looking for quite a wide 6 birth, 3 bedroom tent. Got extra 20% off at Go outdoors, as it seems exclusive to them. After 4 camps now, we have got used to putting up, the last time was 15 minutes - 4 poles, gather the poles after sleeving them and stretch out, then peg 4 corners down. Looks a good tent and IS wide at 4.4m 2 front and 2 side windows. Head height great, 2 hanging points for lights in living area, and 1 in each bedroom. Niggles: inner mesh door has to be opened before outer door, often zip was snagging on lining. Inner mesh door wouldn't always shut, perhaps due to tent being too taut, but not always? side door with canopy not really very affective as too shallow, so not protecting you from the elements. Looking at buying the canopy extension so we can use area for storage (wet shoes, and cooking) but seems very large, and might mean 2 pitches or super size pitch required at some locations. On the whole very pleased, did have a leak near the side door, but couldn't figure out whether this was a condensation point or a leak in the seal.

Manufacturer's Description

Easy to use and with lots of living space, the Vango Athena 600 makes a great base for weekend group camping or family holidays.

The bedrooms are split into a four and two, and the larger room has a dividing curtain that can be used to halve it again creating three equal sleeping areas. With half mesh doors and breathable polyester walls the inners are well suited for summer camping; the 'lights out' colour also helps to keep you cool while blocking out the early morning sun for a longer lie-in.

The living space is large enough for a table and chairs and the angled poles help to maximise headroom across the tent. Mesh storage pockets run beneath the Crystal Clear PVC windows, while closable insect-proof vents are found above. Internal curtains allow you to block out the light without getting out of the tent. A sewn in groundsheet covers the whole of the inner, with a small porch at the front end for storing muddy or wet gear. The side doors have clever mini-canopies that shelter the door if you exit or enter in the rain.

PowerFlex Fibreglass poles are quick and easy to assemble, and the TBS II internal bracing helps to reduce flapping and support the poles in strong winds.
